I just got back from a wonderful weekend photographing wildlife in one of my favorite refuges. I just wanted to post one real quick while I go about my culling of the others.
I saw many bitterns and I fought with the weeds and reeds to get some decent shots. Well......I got lucky with this one! Talk about being a kid in the candy store! Enjoy.
Thanks Harsha, he wasn't out in the open for long!
Socrate, thanks for the kind words.
Lil, thank you.
Anthony, thanks, it is the classic pose. f/10? Totally spaced my friend, the shot before this was of a male and female ringneck that I was trying to get in one shot. I got too excited when I found this guy out in the open. You got me on that, it would have been a better photo at 5.6. Next time.

Hey nice shot of the american bittern Tim! I know they're very shy/illusive so I can understand your exciment when you saw one into the open when I did my 1st fashion/catwalk show I got excited by all the music/lights & girls and forgot the aperture at f10 Good thing that after a few bursts I checked the images w the info
In Europe we have some bitterns too; they look pretty much the same as the american species.
Great capture buddy..one more on the list
