p.1 #1 · The Big Men Fly ! (Aussie Rules Football)

Well yesterday marked the opening of the local Aussie Rules competition. The first thing I learnt was that its not just the players who get a bit rusty over the summer. After doing maiinly surfing for the last few months it took me quite a while to adjust and try and keep up with the play. Anyway here are a few shots from the two games I saw on Saturday.

Sorry about the watermarks, these are straight from my website rather than uploaded especially for FM like I normally do.

C & C always welcome

1) This guy didn't look rusty

2) Unfortunately for some, the season only last 6 minutes

3) A High Mark

4) Another mark

5) Not sure why I watermarked this one - I doubt the player will want to buy it

9) AFL is probably the only sport where officials (umpires) are required to have ball skills. This quick sequence I put together shows a centre bounce by an ump. (If you don't think it requires much skill, go outside and try it, then I will tell you the story about the guy I saw who broke his nose trying this at a backyard BBQ )

I am not a sports photographer but I thoroughly enjoyed this sequence; captions and all.

Andrew,

Well, I work in Newcastle (in an office unfortunately, not as a photographer), but I actually live down at Lake Macquarie.

Andrew,

These were all taken using the 400 5.6 L. I have found this great for surfing and can get some really nice sharp Footy pics, but I would love to have a fast zoom. The fixed length is a bit of a restriction

No 3 and 4 really good. Marks are good to capture. Good use of depth of field to minimise what in general are pretty messy backgrounds.

Personally I love seeing players eyes in sports shots too, so, in this regard maybe something to look at next time. Just my opinion.

Must be nice to be outside again taking footy photos in the sun.

Thanks for sharing

I like the first shot the best, great work all round.
With the high mark shots, i think they could do with the ground in the shot to give reference to the height some of those guys can get. I'm guessing the backgrounds could then become a problem.

Cheers
Allan

Hey hey, glad to see another coastie on here!!

Good photos aussie Dave anyway - great to see some Aussie influence on here, instead of all those Lacrosse shots ;-)
