hello everyone. i'm a first time poster here, long time lurker. i love photography and eventually would like to get paid for it, but putting money aside (because i love my day job as well) i still enjoy photography a ton.
i've seen people get ripped apart on this forum, so yes, i AM a brave one. it's nice to have friends tell you great things about your pictures, but if i eventually would like to consider myself a pro, then your opinions are the ones that really count. please look at the images on my flickr page and tell me what you think! thanks in advance
Yeah, the climate on here lately hasn't exactly been conducive to encouraging newbs to post. Kudos for the guts to post in this atmosphere!
I don't really have time to do my usual in-depth critique, but I'll say that I see a good bit of potential in these images, especially given your professed experience level. Many of these photos are very nice.
I agree with Evan. I think you have a lot of potential. In fact, I wouldn't have thought you just started out. You black and white conversions are very nice. You see past just taking snap shots. You have caught emotions in you images. Of course you can improve. Stay with it, and keep looking at what others do as well. Not to copy someone else, but to see deeper into what you like and dislike about your own work. Yvette
I'll give it a go but try putting everything in different categories... it'll be a lot easier for people to look through.
carrillo (205): I liked this one... cool vantage point.
carrillo (190): nice composition, the guy's face nees to be lightened.
IMG_0502: I'd like to see this one either full length or cropped at the hips. Try not to crop at the ankles... it just looks weird.
web (1): I know it's not a wedding shot, but you gotta pay attention to the clothing details: her top is gaping and showing her bra strap.
IMG_0474bw: I really like this one... but would like to see a less distracting background.
IMG_0447bw: Good energy!
IMG_0105: would like to see the ring closer, and you could still get the shape of the bride in the abckground.
IMG_0075: Again, great energy but she looks a bit awkward with that pose. Maybe her sitting up & you shooting from above.
IMG_0058c: Arms away from body would make them look slimmer and a tilt of the head. Try getting a few poses when you're shooting like this.
springer (27): Are those cherry blossums? Geez, we still have snow...
w5: nice shot but again: watch your background. If you can't get a clean one, use your longest lens possible and shoot wide open.
w4: I like this one.
w1: ditto
w3: ditto, but would like to see the grooms legs uncropped.
w2: nice but you need some fill light, looks a bit dark.
0211153-R1-032-14A cropped: the light looks too hard. Try shooting in the shade or even backlight.
urs: would like to see it closer with a long lens.
cm: watch the light on her face.
cm(2): nice intimate moment. Try moving around, different sides, shooting looking down. It might not always work but you gotta experiment.
Most of the shots on the last page are fairly good but try shooting with longer lens for portraits. Your family and protrait stuff is nice... it's obvious people like you... you seem to get good energy in your shots. As you shoot more you'll start to see things beyond the center of the frame of your camera. Keep shooting!
Wow. thanks patty for really taking the time to look at the shots. i really appreciate your comments about the picture, some of the things you said i never even thought of to improve the picture. the ones towards the bottom of the list, i took not too long ago with a point and shoot camera so DOF was hard to do in some instances. the cropping comments are really beneficial. i will be more on the look out for cutting off arms, legs, and things growing out of people's heads.

i found that comment funny, because they have to like me, i am their friend!
i've been doing a LOT of reading, and have probably learned more in the past few months than i ever thought i would. thanks for all your help!
@Evan: i've been a long time admirer of your work, and have seen you in other forums. you're not only a great photographer but a great person as well, the epitome of professionalism. thanks for the comments!
Soupy, like the others I think you've got loads of potential. Some of the black and whites are great! If I were t offer one bit of advice, it would be "check the background"
I think you've got a good future in photography - just keep trying and learning!
