To start; I often hike with this camera; it is often subject to several miles worn around my neck or in my Gregory backpack. The manual focus ring on my 40D kit lens (28-135mm IS) is not working anymore. It all started when the focus ring felt stuck, when I went to manually focus, it was stuck in place. I applied just a little pressure and after a “pop” it freed and manual focus resumed. Now, when on auto focus I can see the autofocus working like it should, and my shots turn out fine. When I’m in manual focus it requires many more turns to run through the focus range. For instance when I want to focus to infinity I might have to spin the ring several times to get it to infinity, the same goes for macro. The distance markers move in auto focus, but in manual it takes several rotations of the ring to get the lens to move through focal length. Is this a “send it to canon to fix” issue and do you think it could affect the auto focus of the lens?
My 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM did exactly the same thing, except for the locked ring, nothing like that happened to me, but the exact same issue with the MF ring, not very helpful I know, but my solution was to buy a 24-70
