p.1 #1 · posting images from work

I have been posting things I shoot from work on my personal blog just to kinda show what Ive been working on, not for sale or anything. But the sports editor says its against the rules for me to do that and that I need to talk to the boss about it, so I did and my boss man told me that he "has to think about it and see if that is allowed" But they tell me I can use these photos for my portfolio so what is the difference if Im gonna post my portfolio online on my blog anyways. I dont see a difference if its in my portfolio or not I should still be allowed to at least post them. Anyone have any insight on this or has this happened to anyone else. Should I be allowed to post the images I shoot?

Thanks

Joel

I don't know, call me crazy but I would think that your EMPLOYER is probably the best person to make that decision. I could say, "dude that's like so not totally fair! I don't see any difference between posting to your portfolio or your blog!" But in the end what I think or say concerning this subject means nothing.

One big difference I do see between a portfolio and blog is that your blog contains editorial content, your thoughts and opinions on either the images or related items which may not reflect the opinions of your employer. Your portfolio is just a collection of images with no personal opinion whatsoever.

Who owns the copyright for the work? You might be able to satisfy them by putting something visible on the image. Copyright Rocky Mount Telegram or something like that.

Thanks for the feedback and Steve makes a good point. The Telegram has copyrights to the images and thanks for the good idea John.

It may also be about you doing personal stuff on work computers and during work hours.
Go to http://www.dooce.com/about and see what happened to her

I understand it isn't a good comparison, just be careful if you are able to blog form work. Or you can get Dooced.

As your employer owns the copyright you have no right to post them or use them in any manner without their explicit permission. They are their images, not yours.

Yea, IMO, this really is a no-brainer. If your employer says don't post images, you either don't post them or you find another place to work.

I work for FairFax (one of if not the biggest newspaper corp here) and I just found out recently we can do anything we want with unpublished images.
That's right, I could even sell them to News LTD if i wanted!!! Published images though are FairFax's and I cant do anything with them. I will put some on my site and I dont think they would care.

It appears as though Joel works for Rocky Mount Telegram. If RMT tells him he can't post their images on his blog, then he really has only two choices...to comply with his employer or find somewhere else to work.

The way the local paper handles this issue with me is very different than Joel's situation, but my situation is just not relevant to his.

Joel...have you asked RMT if you could put links on your blog back to your images on the paper's site? Not really as good as posting the actual images on your blog, but it might be better than nothing. Just a thought.

Good luck.

In my opinion, all the opinions, and personal anecdotes by the posters to this thread, although interesting to read, are irrelevent. Get clarification by your employer and do what's requested. It's not worth getting into a pissing match over this.
