UAA's photographer had to shoot a wedding Saturday, so instead of using one of their back up shooters, I got the call and had a blast. I have never seen a crazier game... Here are 5 shots from the Battle of the Islands (BYU-Hawaii v Chaminade) and the GNAC showdown between host University of Alaska - Anchorage, and Seattle Pacific University, which I turned down a scholarship to back in 1990 because they had no photo courses..... but could have played ball with... More about the UAA/SPU game in a minute.
All shots with the MkII and either 85 1.8 or 70-200 2.8. Gym is not the best to shoot in. A lot of mixed lights. Fluorescent above the court with skylights, and old metal can light above the crowd and in the upper walkway with a pool next door that some of the lovely typical blue cast from pools leaks over....
10. The Seawolves were down by 1 point with 1.7 seconds late when Hair man, I mean McCade Olsen tried a desperation shot from the corner that he got fouled on. McCade hit the two free throws to give the Seawolves a 1 point lead with 1.7 seconds.
11. Last one... After SPU missed a desperation heave with less than a second on the clock, the celebration began as Luke Cooper and the Seawolves head into the finals Monday night against BYU-Hawaii
Great shots. Mixed lighting has always been a challenge in these gyms. You coped well and the white balance looks great. I am a big fan of #4. Keep up the great work! Look forward to the next series.
Thanks everyone...UAA won last night (did not shoot it) and are off to Springfield, Mass for the elite 8. Women also beat top ranked Seattle Pacific in Seattle last night and are also off to the elite 8, but with my high school wolves out of the playoffs and UAA done for the season, it looks like hoops is done for me now.
Carl, These are great shots. I love the emotion and the way these kids play so hard, even more so sometimes than the D1 players do.
We've got subregional here in North Little Rock, AR at Alltel Arena. I have a media credential but I don't get to shoot it but luckily, I'm a writer too so I'm excited about that. I haven't been to a tournament since the 1995 Final Four when Arkansas lost to UCLA in the title game when i was a member of the Ark. Hogwild Band.
