p.1 #1 · Innovatronix or Vagabond with the D-Lites
Well, after a nice hefty bonus from work I've decided to finally buy some new gear. I've been using speedlights and GI triggers, and have been happy, but want something with a faster recycle time, and more power. I chose the D-lite 4 kit because it's a smaller kit making it easier to travel with. Now, I'm stuck between what portable power unit use, should I go with the Innovatronix or Vagabond II? Or what about a DIY pack like bocaj made for his AB's?

I'm using two Vagabond I units and haven't had any problems. Just put two brand new batteries for $100 total and they're good to go for another 4 years. The inverters are incredibly reliable and most expensive.

I'm in the same dilemma right now. I remember some people talking badly about the vagabonds and how there was a recall, etc etc. Technically, how do they stack up? Anyone used both and have opinions on the build quality and functionality of the units?

The one thing I hated about the Tronix was the sheer size. It's MASSIVE. The VB isn't small, but atleast you can attach it to your stand. Plus, I like the idea of changing out batteries if I need to mid-shoot.

I don't seem to remember a recall. Are you sure you're not confusing Buff's discount program for recent Vagabond I owners?
EDIT - Ah, I see. Affecting some early units, but Buff replaced the inverter (by shipping it directly) with an improved model.
From what I gather, the Innovatonix is on the tech level of the Vagabond I, and has a capacity of 14 Ah v.s. the Vag II's 20. Also, the Vagabond's packaging makes it an easy carry and does double duty as a sandbag by attaching it to a lightstand.

Using the Innavotronix for 2 years now w/o any problems. Its' made my location lighting w/midsize Photogenic Powerlights easy. Have popped off as many as 400 shots and still had plenty of juice left.

Does the VBII work with Calumet Genesis strobes?
You are most likely only going to get responses from people that have tested it. No manufacturer is going to validate this, yea or nay.
But, if it can run the Elinchrom 600RX, then I would believe it would.

I have had one since the day it came out, always worked fine. However, the Vagabond II can be serviced domestically should the unthinkable happen. That is important to me.
