I was checking out the DRebel and the 20D (didn't buy anything yet! ) What a difference in body construction. Still torn over the price difference though. Especially with the DRebel having the $100 rebate and coupled with the fact that I am a beginning level photographer.
Motivate me! Inspire me!! Give some reasons to buy one or the other! !
everyone i know with a rebel wants to move to at least a 10d or 20d. for the price of a new rebel you can pretty much buy a used 10d these days. 10d doesn't get you the mp count of the 20d but gets you a similar build.
You'll own the 300D for 2 to 3 months and want to upgrade assuming budget isn't a big concern. If the goal is to stay under $1,000 then DR is a good choice. With 20D you get alot more -
1) Better ISO, AF & AWB
2) More MP
3) Faster FPS - much faster!
4) Total control over metering & focus modes
5) Much nicer build quality
The 300D is great for somebody who likes point & shoot digicams, but wants more. The 20D and alike are more oriented towards people who want a full featured SLR.
If you can, wait until after Xmas; 20D prices should come down again. Retailers aren't discounting the 20D as much as they were just a month ago.

I owned a DRebel for 8 months before selling it (at a loss of only about $50-$100, having bought it used as well) & buying a 20D. At the time I bought the DRebel, I was using the Canon G3 &, as you say, wanted more. But I had not handled an SLR in 20 years, so I wanted to get into it without spending too much up front. As it turned out, I became obsessed, bought a few nice lenses, started shooting RAW exclusively, installed the hack, and eventually found the limited controls a bit, well, limiting. So the 20D was a natural choice. I don't regret either purchase & would probably do it the same way again -- the DRebel is just a great way to get started in DSLR photography! I also recommend looking at used DRebels on the B&S forum here -- I've seen them at $550-$600 with the kit lens, which is a very inexpensive way to get into the habit. If you're already familiar with SLR photography, know you want the additional controls and more solid construction, but want to limit your up-front expenditure, I agree with some others that a used 10D is a good choice. While I love the 20D & it was the right choice for me at this stage, I think it would be hard for me to justify spending more than twice as much money for a first DSLR when the used market for DRebels & 10Ds is so good right now.
The extra’s the 20D gives are nice butt when you don’t need them the 300D will be just fine.
Both are DSLR’s and give you nice (depends on you and your glass) pictures.
