Re: RF-L or FE-GM (No Trolls, Gatekeepers, or Dismissive Responses)

It feels to me like you are so “all over the map” on your thinking that it is premature to even try to give you specific camera and lens advice. You are apparently considering a set of large zooms… or maybe three primes instead… and an upcoming R8… but maybe not because you don’t like the way that a rumor photo of it looks… so maybe an 4%ii… but possibly a Leica… but maybe something a lot smaller would work…

This is a little like a person saying I think I want breakfast, though maybe dinner wold be better, and I’d like, but vegetarianism is sounding kind of interesting, and I don’t like apples, unless they are green, but really I’d like Mexican food, except I don’t like the way it looks, and wouldn’t truffles be nice?

;-)

Even thinking about buying something at this point is premature. A lot premature.

The Tamron 90/2.8 VXD Macro costs around the same, gives you a true 1:1 macro, and has dramatically faster AF. This makes the Tamron the obvious choice for a budget macro lens.

There’s nothing wrong with the concept of the RF 85mm f/2 macro, it’s the same as my Zeiss 100mm f/2 Makro Planar, which might be where Canon got the idea, and which is one of my most-used lenses. The problem is the execution. There’s no way in the 2020s that I’d spend AUD $1000, which is what Canon are asking, for a lens without weather sealing, and that’s before considering all the other reported deficiencies it might have, such as AF motor, lack of hood, and lesser-quality coatings. But that’s me. Others might be fine with it.

It’s a real shame because a lens like this is great for travel, allowing for street, portraits, and close-ups of small things like flowers. I even used the Zeiss to get a shot of a bee in flight.

(The Zeiss indeed doesn’t have weather sealing either, but I bought it 15 years ago.)

Can I chime in without derailing the thread please..
I too used to be all for weather sealed until it dawned on me that in hot weather the internal lenses will get hot especially if the lens is black - but I think white will still suffer too

Heat that can’t escape will likely cause humidity… how does that then affect the internals? My biggest worry is it will cause fungus.

I've had mixed experiences with lenses over the past 50 years. I've mostly lived in hot, humid climates all this time (Caribbean and Florida). A few lenses have gotten fungus, most haven't. I take very good care of my equipment though. Cameras, on the other hand, have been sensitive to humidity. I had several cameras fail me while shooting indoor events that used fog machines. Also had my A7c and R6 heat up and stop working while shooting a short video indoors in AC.

The bigger question is what have you decided to do?

Good question. I plan on renting the Canon RF-L primes and zooms to see how they feel.

My idea of waiting for the R8II to be released just fizzled away after seeing the pictures of it. It's just another Sony clone. I dislike the ergonomics of my A7iv, and the R8II looks identical to my A7iv, so I'm scratching that one off the list.

That narrows my choices to go with either Canon RF-L primes or "trinity" zooms, and maybe add an R5II as a primary using my R6II as a backup for when/if my R5II dies. All will depend on how balanced these outfits are and how much pain I'm willing to tolerate carrying that behemoth outfit around my neck.

Next possible option is to rent a Leica M11 and a 35mm f1.4 to see if it's "love at first site". If it feels incredibly amazing and shoots like I expect, then I'll probably sell off all my Sony gear and short Canon primes (not the long lenses; I want those if I go Leica), and use the money toward my first M11.

Not to completely rule out Sony, before I make any final decision, I'll probably rent a GM prime and a GM zoom to see how they feel on my A7c. If they balance well and blow me away, then I'll consider getting an A7CR with those GM lenses. If I do this, I won't need to sell my Canon gear because I like shooting with two platforms. I will definitely sell my A7iv and SOME of my unused Canon lenses though.
