Rebranding or not, it is strange too me that Leica copied Panasonic's idea of a 44MP sensor in an L mount body. From my experience M mount lenses on the S1RII work just like my M mount lenses worked on my SL3 and SL3-S.
This all said, I enjoy using my M mount glass MUCH more on my recent Nikon Z5II purchase with Techart AF adapter than on any L mount camera out there.
It is such better experience with M Mount glass (my initial reason for getting into the SL system) that I have sold all my SL and Lumix cameras and almost all my L mount glass, except for 2 Panasonic lenses which BTW performed tremendously on the SL3.
Today I carry an X2D2 with 35-100 which covers about 95% of my needs which, for me, is way better than carrying an SL system camera.
So, you want the M mount lens rendering but the AF experience. If so, the SL is not the camera for you. Maybe you are driven more by an adapter company than a camera company?
People seem to think only about the mpx when they talk about sensors. This is only one of many attributes of a sensors design. If you choose BSI CMOS architecture to discuss then pretty much everyone decided to copy Sony cameras. Are all cameras with 24mpx Sony sensors like you Nikon Z5 ii has just copies of each other? I think not. There are other thinks that lead you to prefer the Nikon.
There are differences in the Sony sensor in the SL3-P sensor and the Lumix Sony sensor. Both are being purchased from Sony with slight customizations. There are big differences between the cameras that are important to which one fits someone best.
It seems clear to me that this is not a simple rebranding.
You have no idea what I am about (especially after your terse comment about me being more driven by an adapter company than a camera company), but that's OK since I guess I have no idea what you are about since you constantly tell us you have inside knowledge about Leica after meeting various Leica execs.
Have you seriously tried another camera system that is not excessively Leica recently? Trying the Hasselblad X2D2 made me realize how lacking my SL3 system actually was for me and my photography.
Many here seem to only want to hear lavish praise about Leica products instead of keeping an open mind about other options out there.
Other than. disassembling an S1RII and an SL3-P I have seen no concrete proof that the sensor glasses are different in front of the same Sony sensor.
I don't know what upset you. I was agreeing with you that the SL system was probably not the system that best suits you. I never disagreed with any of your choices. I just noted that having AF capabilities on M lenses was a unique determinant factor to me as I enjoy the MF experience. If that does really increase your enjoyment as strongly as you stated it does then I support that for you. I don't beleive that capability or adapter is available on the SL making it not the best choice for you. I don't get the hostility over that?
Yes, I have tried the Hasselblad X2D2 system briefly. In fact, I was offered a long term loan of a body and lens. From everything I have seen, it is a superb system. But it is not right for me. I am more interested in having a unified system to shoot my vintage screw mount through modern M mount lens collection on. This includes bodies from IIIf, M6, M11, and SL. I also have a strong affection for my APO-SL lens collection. No where do I make the claim that this preference of mine is better or more valid than yours.
I am relying on past publications by others regarding sensor cover glass thickness. Testing seems to show that this is very relevant when using some M lenses. It seems Leica has the thinnest at 0.8mm, Nikon next at 1.1mm, Sony and Canon much thicker. Leica does make a point that it considers analog M lenses when designing its sensors. This includes such things such as asymmetrical lenses on its sensor cover glass.
I think we should just carry on enjoying sharing each other's choices in the hobby of photography.
