For me personally, the reasons choosing the 600 GM over the 300 GM+2X TC are:
1. F4 at 600mm, and the more buttery bokeh that comes with that.
2. Ability to go 856mm with the 1.4X TC. I had a 1.4X TC on my 600 GM 95% of the time.
That comes with the cost and size/weight. But there is no substitute to F4.
The 300 GM+2X TC is so much smaller/lighter and "cheaper", much closer MFD, but it can't go beyond 600mm. For me, it's all about priority, trade-off, sharpness at 600mm is not one of the deciding factors, IHMO. As I said in my previous post, I just sold my 600 GM.
Since the 300 GM is so good with the 2X TC, if would be fantastic if Sony just makes a 300mm F2.8 with a built-in 2X TC, it would probably be even sharper and a bit lighter than the current combo. The size increase with a built-in 2X TC would not bother me, I would take the convenience of a built-in TC.
