This year was an abbreviated backpack trip to the Winds (both my dog & I aren't getting any younger & I was hit by a car as I was walking down the sidewalk in late January). The Sweetwater trailhead is about as far south as you can get and is definitely not a popular one despite being on the CDT. The trail starts out crossing a creek on a log with a flattened, crosshatched surface that takes the place of the old bridge. The next bridge, 6 or 7 miles further was not in much better shape, but the marsh it spans was dry. After 2 days, we reached the ridge overlooking Upper Deep Creek Lake and Little El Capitan. The plan was to do a high, off-trail traverse starting at 11,000', climbing 2400' in 2 miles, but I was saved from that as that morning was socked in and graupel made me retreat to the tent for breakfast.
