We are missing one high-quality, compact, f2.0 aperture 28 or 35 lens for the A7 -- one step away from taking this discussion to a different level. But in all these years, no-one has made such a lens, so I doubt it is coming soon. In the meantime the RX1R III is the best alternative.
I have been waiting for a quality 28mm f2 lens ever since I bought the original A7 and eventually moved away from the Leica M system. I really don't know why Sony or any of the third party makers have never released one. I tried the original Sony FE28 but it really is somewhat soo so and really dated now
Would you be ok with a manual focus lens? If you would I have the Voigtlander 28 f/1.5 in Sony E mount and I really like it, and it is pretty small. Voigtlander just came out with a 28 f/2 APO for Leica M mount that is exceptional optically (see Fred's review) and I think we may get that in Sony E mount within the next year as well. So, Cosina (who makes Voigtlander) seems to have begun to address the need for a quality 28mm.
In addition Thypoch has brought out their Simera 28 f/1.4 in Sony E mount (it doesn't have electrical contacts, however). Several people on the forum like that manual focus lens as well and it seems to be a quality performer as well. Fred has a review of that lens on Leica M mount as well.
No not in this case as one of the whole reason of me to possess high end Sony cameras is the AF system. 28mm has always been my most used focal length starting back in the late 70's with the Olympus OM system then Nikon, Leica and now I have the Q2 monochrom which goes everywhere with me.
