A different way to look at it might be relative to time.

By that, I mean if you willing to wait 6 months (arbitrary example) to see a $600 price drop, could you rent an X2D for $100 / month in the mean time to be making images now, instead of waiting 6 months before making images with the X2D.

That might seem kinda silly (just an example), but in the realm of the "long term rental program" ... there is an assessment of $$$ now vs. time now vs. $$$ later vs. time later. Which it boils down to how big of a hurry are you to get it in your hands? Meh, someday ... or, I've got images I need (or would really like) to be making with it sooner, rather than later.

So, if you "overspend" now, realize that you'll have the value of the images made between now vs. someday. Conversely, you could buy glass for the Hassy now, and stockpile it while waiting for the body price to drop.

Always a tough call to "time the market", so to speak ... so, sometimes it is easier to place a value on your time / opportunities / missed opportunities ... to help get some perspective on things.

I wish you could rent one for $100/month. It is more like $600/week. I’d love to try out shooting with one and a couple of lenses, to see it would be a big difference for me, but that would be the price of a good lens. Alas…just dream, I guess. I do like the sound of a $4200 X2D but likely too much to hope for.

Yup, thus the "long term rental" ... i.e. if you go ahead and buy it, even if you only keep it for a month (or longer), and you were to sell it for a small loss, it'll be less than the $$$ you'd be out for a month's rental. Never mind the cost of a rental to get started shooting now vs. waiting 6 months or a year till prices drop, and how that would "offset".

Time vs. money ... they each have their merits of value. Something everybody has to assess for their own situation.

So, given the lag time waiting on the rumor. Then, the lag time waiting on release to market. Then, the lag time for X2D pricing to move ... it could be a while before we see a significant drop. Particularly when (imo) it might be a situation similar to the M10R vs. M11 ... in that, the M10R pricing held pretty strong, as folks felt it served their needs well enough that there wasn't THAT much reason to upgrade to the M11.

So, if you do purchase the X2D now, and say the price does go down by another $600 ... that amortizes to about $50 / month. And, if you plan on keeping the X2D for say 5 years, that rolls down to about $10/month of "overpayment" vs. waiting for the $$$ to drop that $600. But, that also means you've got that amount of more time / sooner to be using the X2D.

Always a tough call to answer what someone "should" do ... but, as long as you have your head wrapped around why you do (or don't do) a given decision, you should be good either way.
