The takeaway from above is that the ZF basically has to be shot somewhere between 0 and -3.5 to retain any useable highlights in any high contrast situation.
In further testing, EC -1.0 seems to be the minimum to shoot with matrix to retain any color in the highlights, though they are still trending quite grey at EC -1.0. What the hell?
I tested with a native Z AF lens, adapted Nikon F lens, and CV manual lens, and all give the same results.
Are you by chance in highlight weight matrix metering on the Z9?
Not sure what you mean. There is "matrix" and there is "highlight weighted". AFAIK there's no blend of the two. Tests posted above were done in both settings on both cameras.
The cruz of the issue is that the Z9 rightly chose ISO64 for both modes and adjusted the shutter speed accordingly.
The ZF chose ISO1250 for matrix (which destroyed the highlights) and ISO110 for highlight (which allowed recovery via EC +3.5 in post).
Where did you have the focus point for each photo? Matrix metering evaluates the whole scene but will still bias to create the "correct" exposure on the focus point. Can you provide EXIF data for each photo?
