What accounts for the vast difference in exposure and contrast in these images? Is it a situation where your flash is underpowered relative to ambient for the first, and the dominant exposure source in the second? What shutter speed are you shooting at? If slower than 1/320 you're going to risk softness from double exposures if mixing flash and ambient, added with handshake and subject movement.
