One thing that Ron reminded me of is that the faster, premier designs also tend to have a higher quality of rendering not matched by slower designs when shooting at the same aperture. The RF or EF f/1.2L lenses, for example, will display a smoother out of focus rendering when shot at f2 than any of the nifty fifties. I think other lens makers have also prioritized rendering for their top tier lenses.
