I've had the tamron since its release. I've had a few copies but will spare you the details as to why, first was stolen on vacation, etc. I like to shoot similarly, zoom from tele to wide as subjects pass by me (think mountain bikes and dogs).
I also find that the Tamron can definitely lose focus when zooming (admittedly, I could probably have better technique). As such, I decided to try the Sony 16-55 as it is touted to be an amazing lens and superior to the Tamron.
Unfortunately, in my experience, the 1655 was no better in any regard. Focus was no more accurate, while zooming or with stationary subjects (both lenses perform quite well with stationary subjects). Furthermore, the IQ of the 1655 was no better than the Tamron. I suspect my expectations were very high based on comments on other forums (DPR). I swear I've heard people say the 1655 is like having a bag of primes. But in my case I was totally underwhelmed with the 1655. Seriously no significant difference in the IQ when compared to the tamron. I sent it back. I'm sticking with the Tamron, which is a really nice lens, particularly for the price.
I think the 1655 is totally overpriced. The IQ and size difference between it and the tamron is negligible. I desperately missed the 15 mm on the long end.
I'm sticking with the tamron. Paired with the 6700 it makes for a very nice all purpose kit. But...as good as the gear is these days it's still not magical. I think with this set up I/we will still have missed shots from time to time.
I'm sure to get flamed for my opinion but maybe not as bad here on FM. If I posted this in the APS-C forum on DPR I'd likely get eaten alive! lol!
