Sossusvlei is a region of tall sand dunes in the Southern Namib Desert in Namibia. The iron-rich sand renders the dunes there reddish. In some areas, the reddish colors are beautifully intense, and they are definitely different than what is normally associated with dune colors elsewhere. As arid as the climate in that region is, there is still wildlife, which mostly consists of grazing animals.
The most common wildlife in that region is oryx. They stand at their shoulder about 4-5 feet tall and therefore quite large. Oryxes are well-adapted to desert life and they feel quite home there. They do climb high up on some sand dunes in search of food. The remaining wildlife, like springbok, ostrich, etc. stay pretty much in the lower elevation. Jackals are seen in that area, too but I didn’t get to see, let alone, photograph any. FYI, in addition to images that were captured from the ground there are some in the set were photographed from a helicopter. Some of the images include quite a bit of the environment they live in.
Thank you for stopping by and please feel free to leave any feedback,
