The 200-500 lens gets less love than it should. I have owned two copies and have used them around the world. Optically, then lens is toe to toe with the more expensive 200-400 VR and performs like a 500 prime when used on a DX body like the 200-500.
The D500 + 200-500 continues to be the best bang per buck per pixel for a wildlife shooter.
My only gripe is with the build/construction. If Nikon were to redesign the lens with an internal Zoom, update the focus motor, and update the coatings, I would gladly spend $3000 on a Z-mount version. Optically, the lens is more than good enough!
