Actually Sony seems to be late with these lenses. Tamron and Sigma beat them to the 24mm, and Tamron has a 35 f/2.8, Sigma has a 35 f/2 and 45 f/2.8, and Zeiss has a 40 f/2 that will compete with the 40 f/2.5. Sigma's 45 f/2.8 (as well as the Sony f/1.8 and Sony f/2.8 macro) will also be competing with the Sony f/2.5.
Another way to say that is Sony isn't adding anything very new at all to the system with these lenses. I find that a bit odd when different lenses would add more to the system (e.g., a 24 f/1.8, a small 40 f/1.8, a small 50 f/1.4).
Good points!
The Zeiss Batis 40/2 is by no means compact or small, though.
