After using Sony mirrorless cameras exclusively since the release of the NEX-5 in 2010, I purchased a Leica M10-P at the beginning of 2019. And never looked back. The M10-P was augmented by other Leica bodies including an ancient (2012) Leica M Monochrom, which rekindled my interest in shooting black and white film and so was joined by an M4.
Fred’s purchase of an M240 is guaranteed to cause massive cognitive dissonance amongst the multitude of Leica haters on FredMiranda.com. One of the reasons he gave resonated with me:
I can disconnect from all the modern electronic marvels keeping things simple and exercise creativity. This can also be done with my A7R IV but I am surprised by how much the rangefinder and simplicity of the Leica body can be satisfying to the shooting experience.
This satisfying simplicity and not having the camera do all the work for me was precisely why I made the switch to Leica.
So far I have two lenses for it. CV 35/1.2 III and Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM. (Staying away from Leica lenses)
Good luck with that! I was convinced that I would be perfectly happy sticking to CV and ZM lenses. Until I heard the siren call of the Black Chrome Edition Summilux-M 50/1.4 ASPH.
I can already tell you that the Voigt can't keep up with the ZM at infinity at wide apertures. (At close distance is no contest)
The ZM on the Leica is at Sigma 35/1.2 level. I'm floored. Too bad we can't get this performance on the Sony even with the PCX front lens mod.
My other reason (in addition to the challenge and the simplicity of photographing with a Leica) is that, after years of getting unsatisfying results, I came to the conclusion that adapting M-mount lenses to stock Sony bodies is a fool’s errand. And those who suggest that a thin-sensor mod or a front-end filter solves the problem are ignoring the advantage afforded by the inherent accuracy of rangefinder focusing with normal and wide lenses.
I find it quite surprising that the rangefinder allows me focus with great accuracy with both 35mm lenses wide open for environment portraits. I was not expecting that.
I’m hoping that Fred will choose to post his M240 pictures in the Leica M/X/T/S/Q Picture Thread. He’ll be warmly welcomed, as I was a year or so ago.
I know--I read Fred's post and thought it was funny cause it really will throw people. Especially when Bastian just wrote a review that was very technically minded where he was overwhelmingly disparaging of the M10. My biases push me thinking that Leica gear is just fine. Some of it is pretty magical, some of it is pretty meh.
Even though I don't own much Leica gear, shoot many brands, and have zero nostalgia with it. I do enjoy my film camera, love the some of the glass (75 Lux, 50 Lux, 35 lux pre-ash can be magical though not my type of lens) and am as interested in the experience as much as the technicalities. And we are largely past the point of sufficiency even with an M240, except things like macro or high DR scenes or AF or extreme FL's. Reminds me of the a900 which I simply love the output from, absolutely gorgeous if you can stay within the shooting envelope.
But, it's healthy to have a diversity of opinions on FM and otherwise. I do get a kick out of people being so passionately or against. And I think the next camera I pick up will be a Mamiya 7 because of the simplicity and experience with the output. But I'll continue to run multiple systems as they each have their worth (to me).
