What are Canon and Sony thinking about when they include lens feet that virtually nobody uses or in my case can use. Does anyone have a tripod these days with a 3/8" screw to mount your camera or lens on to?
The dovetail sure does not hurt anything and if Wimberly sells them at a profit for $79 the lens makers have their head of their rear ends for not supplying them.
So I anxiously await the arrival and Oh crap I didn't order a lens foot to use it. RRS is sold out and backordered of course so I ordered two Wimberly lens feet for the 200-600G and my 600 GM that shows up tomorrow. Wow now I wait until Thursday since I did not get my order in on time for 2nd day Wed.
I have a whole drawer full of old RRS, Kirk, and Wimberley long lens plates so I can accommodate pretty well any long lens that comes along.
So do I but they are all 1/4" and I will never use a lens plate on a $13,000 lenses and $3,500 cameras to a screw in lens plate. I do not like them and I do not trust them. I have had way too many loosen up with much lighter weight shorter lenses.
When you are walking around the Zoo or birding for hours on end with a monopod or right shoulder a long heavy rig like a 400 or 600GM have way too much torque to trust a lens plate with a screw holding it to the Sony lens foot. With my tripod I use a Wimberley Gimbal and nothing is more secure than a bolted (4 bolts) on dovetail lens foot.

I walk around the Zoo or birding with a monopod over my right shoulder and the camera and lens need to be 100% secure I am not going to risk a screw coming loose or having to keep checking it. I check the Screw knob on my Wimberly Gimbal again over my shoulder or Gitzo monopod sometimes but they stay tight even with all that weight and leverage walking abound for hours at a time.
