How is the AF speed of this lens with the TC14BIII on the D500 or D850 vs 200-500 on same?

Even with the 1.4TCIII it is faster AF than the 200-500 on my D500. Bare 300PF lens is maybe a little faster than with the TC but not by much. I have found it to have a harder time to go from infinity to MFD with the 1.4xTC on it. Actually the 200-500 is better at trying to focus at MFD when you are focused further out. Sometimes the 300PF refuses to even try especially with the 1.4TC on it.

Still the 1.4TC is almost always glued to my 300PF....it is an amazing lightweight walk around birding combo. I seem to have to force myself to use the 200-500 now. If needed you can even shoot one handed with the 300PF/D500 combo

Sounds exciting! And the images you've taken with it, look at least as sharp as your 200-500 images, which are all very sharp.

I looked at the 300PF specs yesterday, hoping to see that it had a 77mm filter. Sure enough. This Canon 500D has been a great tool for getting closer to bees/butterflies and such. Super sharp.

Hope I don't get rebuked, for posting just once on this thread, 2 images *not* taken with the 300PF. Here it's been put on the front of an 80-400 on the D610. However, this lens is hard on the back, when used as a closeup rig.

Trying to imagine, just how nice a close-up lens, this lightweight 300PF would be, with the Canon 500D on the front of it. Canon 500D case, is very small to carry in the pocket and easier than a tube, to install. I give it a ten.

Will be looking for more of your wildlife images with this exciting 300PF lens!
