We are so spoiled now by the dynamic ranges we work with as compared to the days of film, it is an esoteric discussion for sure. Dynamic range is a really big deal in cinema work because there is such a fine line in color grading between blowing highlights and "crushing" blacks. I guess I've just made it a habit to stretch to the highest specs out of the box and go from there, certainly not necessary in most cases.
