North Cascades fall colors | |
We here in the east don\'t usually think if the Pacific Northwest as a fall color destination. But a business trip pulled me away from the eastern display in the middle of October, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a worthy substitute in the North Cascades National Park area. It was, of course, raining most of the time I was there, but the interplay of copious water, wispy clouds and steep slopes added to the drama. Who needs bluebird days!?
1. Skagit River at Newhalem

2. Outside the park in the foothills surrounding the Skagit River

3. A Rain-fed cascade emptying into Gorge Lake

4. Isolation of maples against a firry hillside.

5. A hike up to Maple Pass in 2 to 3 feet of early snow. I lost the trail in the snow below the pass, but I made it up to where the larches live. From what I understand, they usually turn and lose their needles before significant snow, and no one else was hiking to this elevation under these conditions, so this is a fairly unique view.

I have a few more that didn\'t make the five-image cut, which I may post later.
Comments and suggestions welcome.
