Re: Leica M8/M9/X1 Picture Thread

Thanks guys!

Uzay: I wasn\'t going to include it, but then thought why not.. makes me laugh each time I see it.
Andrew: great set and I really like the last one. To me that\'s a classic angle/view at that cemetery. I think you\'re right about the Summarit 5cm at different distances. At close range and depending on the background it can look quite normal because even though it\'s kind of soft, sharpness is still pretty decent. At far distances though sharpness goes to pot (could be my copy) and it takes on a much more dreamy look, especially if there are nearer out of focus peripheral objects. The funky bokeh becomes much more evident with a mottled background with plenty of specular highlights.
Sarheat: wow, that\'s shallow depth of field on the first one! Any rangefinder calibration issues with that combo? I\'ve heard it\'s not uncommon. Looking forward to seeing more.
Michael: I think the start high contrast look works well with these and I very much like the first one.

Still plugging away with the Nikkor 10.5cm. It seems to have a subtle, slightly soft quality at near minimum focusing distance, even if stopped down a fair amount. I think these were at f/8. Mind you I\'ve mess around a bit in post as well. It\'s the same scene, slightly different angle, and one is flipped.

Someone mentioned the Nikkor is kind of Zeissy. Some of the rendering characteristics might be similar, but it\'s not as high contrast a lens. What that means is more mid tone values to play with in post and cranking up the contrast isn\'t as risky as with modern glass. I again photographed the same scenes today with the Summarit and the 50 Lux, and the Lux images feel like they have extreme contrast. Almost feels too harsh in comparison. It\'s interesting to see this because I\'ve generally only used modern lenses.
