Don\'t know, but my guess is editing.
I\'ve only had 5DmkII users complaining to me personally, after having seen some of my Zeiss photos (with D700), that they get banding and can\'t reproduce the the shadow areas, but my guess is that that too is mostly down to editing.
I am surprisedto see how many Nikon FF user in this thread lately I think it is really depend what you do, for landscaping, 21M certainly can have more detail than 12M. And Zeiss lens especially 21 deserve more pix if you asked.
I don\'t need 21M and almost never tripod shot anything since I almost never do landscaping shot, 12M has good balance to me, I don\'t mind have more if pix is as clean or better than D700.
