Wow, I have not seen that happen. I would send it in and push hard for the case that it is a material defect. A pro camera should be able to handle the temperature drop to 28 °F without the sensor cover breaking.

This is actually pretty easy of a repair, just take off the back, a few more screws for the PCB under that, and then theres a sensor board. Very, very simple, I can do it in about 30 minutes max. But I know for sure Nikon will charge like 400 for it.
$400 to replace a full frame sensor, what are you talking about. Plan on at least $1300-1700 unfortunately. Nikon and Canon both had a problem with the bonding between the AA filter and actual sensor breaking down and causing cracks. It was a rare problem but it did happen. 99% chance they are going to want to bill you full boat for the replacement but fight with them.

Fat chance that I'll pay that. There was no reason for that filter to break except for defective part.
Like I said with my original post the camera wasn't dropped or bumped. The camera looks like new. I take especially good care of my equipment.

Well I am not commenting on how your handle your camera's or how the sensor AA filter got broken, I am just telling you what the real charges are liable to be. If your camera is out of warranty and they don't and won't pay for it what are you going to do, throw it in the trash. I just telling you what they charge and wish you best of luck.

I can vouch for DMP. If he says he can fix it, he can. He's very good with cameras. He's actually fixed some of mine before.
If you want to beat the price Nikon will charge you, I think you should PM DMP about him repairing it. He's a well-established member to this website and is an expert on these sort of things.

Thanks for the advice. I'll send him a PM to discuss that option.
Greg, you know you want to just send that down to me, come onnnn. You didn't tell me this happened though, worse enough it was at a girls lacrosse game.

That's nice and I am sure he is a smart fellow, so am I as well and an electrical engineer/designer for 4 decades. Fixing it is really quite easy but you need the part, which is only about $1200 and available only from Nikon. The sensor/AA filter assembly is one of the most expensive pieces of the camera. The AA filter, which is what is broken, is bonded to the sensor and cannot be removed so the entire assembly needs to be replaced. DMP and thousands of others can fix it, ONCE THEY HAVE THE $1200 PART. Perhaps that wasn't clear.
I didn't know it cracked until I used it to shoot Rob Pannell at Cornell. What really sucked is that I didn't notice it until I was 2/3 of the way through the shoot. When I first noticed it I thought the strap was in the way.
By the way keep checking your mailbox you never know.
What? No! The part isn't $1200. Where did you get that info from?
Just happen that I scratched my AA filter when cleaning it (got to be careful ha?)
And I had to replace the entire sensor on Nikon D3. (Nikon doesn't just replace an AA filter alone). I paid $500 ($480 I think) with part and labor. (no shipping since I live close to El Segundo, CA). They are fast and very good. (at least this is my experience with them).
That was about a year ago so I'm not sure if price changed since then, but I'm sure it's not $1200 if it did.
Just call them and ask...
Here is the address:
Nikon Inc. Photo & Digital Service
Nikon Inc. Factory Service
841 Apollo Street, Suite 100
El Segundo, CA 90245-4721
Good luck,

I found my old thread here about the sensor.....
I Paid $471.52 for brand new Nikon D3 FF sensor and labor + tax. (so everything)
And, they did it in 5 days.
Before you contact Nikon, have full written/illustrated documentation ready to go. The shots from that day, the shots later that showed the defect, the weather report for the area you were in showing temp, the temp of the room it was brought into, witnesses who'll verify that you were there, etc, etc. All in a nice, friendly and factual presentation. You want something the counter flak can pass up to his/her boss. Good luck.

Amazing, if thats the cost for new Nikon D3 FF sensor board and labor + tax then I guess whole sale cost to Nikon for FF sensor alone may be around $200, and people here on FM say they can't built a FX camera for say around $1000?
