Would love to get some feedback on some of the shots I've considered keepers lately. Not looking for pats on the back so much as ideas on how I could improve my work. I've been a big fan of Canerino's style for the last couple years, and just sold my Nature & Wildlife gear to get more into this type of work. All shots with 40d and either 35L or 70-200 2.8II. None of these were staged, as you can probably tell by the fact that he's in his jammies for most of them!
Chuck's work is amazing and I too strive to get to his level. One thing I think you would agree is that he almost never takes a posed shot. I have found that If I put the lens in my kids face I get the fake/forced smile just like you did in number 2. I think the best thing you can do is capture your child doing something he/she loves to do, reading, coloring, playing, etc... and never ask he/she to smile. Get some dimension/layers in the shots, so shoot wider and get something in the foreground and background. Read Daniel and Chuck's blog on the subject http://thefamilyphotojournalist.blogspot.com/2010/05/composition-layering.html. Anyhow, I hope my comments help, so keep shooting!!
