Yes, thanks I read Toothwalker's articles on SA and I see he mentions the Softar lens add ons which induce SA to soften the image just like the new 35/1.4 does itself.
So my question to the lens experts is, why design this SA undercorrection into the lens design when you could design a normally corrected SA lens and just add a Softar for those times when you want that soft look?
I assume doing in the lens design itself instead of with addon softar gives better results?

One other question for the lens experts here:
Does a undercorrected SA lens design like the new 35/1.4 transfer light through as well as a normally corrected SA lens? Will the lens perform as well in low light conditions? Does it suffer light loss and so it forces you to use a higher iso in low light?

That was taken with a d700, neutral settings, so pretty much no sharpening. And yeah, I think that this (wide open) is quite poppy, when I edit the full shots, they look really "present". When the nikon 35g in addition is amazing stopped down, smaller AND got af... I am hard pressed to wait for the ZF.

Well, I wouldn't call that looking poppy (I'd be hard pressed to imagine any photo taken with any lens looking poppy in that size and with that subject), but it does look kind of sharp. Center of frame?

After the initial bashing, I have the feeling this lens is going to become a classic
I told you Zeiss know exactly what they are doing, especially with a lens of this price, not to mention size and weight. Zeiss didn't screw up with this lens after all

You're welcome to all the kind folks who thanked me for posting those snap shots. Please keep in mind, that again, they are JPEG images as well as unsharpened and untouched SOOC. I'll be filming a wedding with it next weekend so I'm excited to see its cinematic chops .
All in all, the only thing I'm not too happy about is the CA wide open with the lens. I figure that if I need to stop down to f/2 to insure no CA during specific shots, the F/2 35 should be fine. I am loving the wide open rendering and low light capability though, that extra stop does help. Decisions....decisions......

Romain, in terms of CA/purple fringing, I can confirm that . I do find it not as sharp wide open to the same degree as my old ZF 1.4 50, which is why I sold that for the 50 MP.

yep, from a purely technical point of view the 50 planar (I own the CY) is not exactly impressive wide open, but I love his drawing style. I also have a 35 1.4 CY and 100MP and tend to find the 100MP a bit too clean in its rendering. I really like it, but the 50, even with all its technical flaws has a strong personality I like. And from what I read, the 85mm 1.4 is similar.
I'm just wondering if Zeiss made the same choices with this lens :-) what do you think of its rendering style in general?
p.24 #19 · Zeiss ZE/ZF.2 35mm f/1.4 (according to Roger Cicala/lens rentals.com)
Romain, I have both 50 and 85 f:1.4, and also find my 100MP a bit to clean (A French thing, maybe? ). I tried the 35 f:1.4, and it is not the same as those two. It is closer to the 35 f:2.0 than to any other Z* I know. Except wider than 2.8, it is very close indeed in rendering style.
