Yes my experience as well - takes forever to load in CS5 (both 32 and 64 bit), and then process a file; and it does crash Photoshop (both 32 and 64).

My advice is to wait until they sort out bugs...

Am working on an HP laptop with Windows 7 and 6GB of ram

Downloaded it as well and yes, it does take time to load up and even when it has finished loading it isn't too snappy, but it does not crash my Win7/CS5/LR3/32 bit setup. The conversions seem a bit smoother, richer and noise free than when using the original Silver Efex, but that is based on about 10 minutes of playing and so is a seat of the pants guess. I've got an image I'll be PP'ing and printing this weekend and so hope to have a better grasp of it then.

Peace,

Todd

I purchased it last night and reprocessed two pictures. I didn't have any problems with stability, but it felt a little slower. Things I really like:

1) Fine control of brightness, contrast, structure

2) New zoom tool

3) Dynamic borders

4) Compare button

5) Histogram combined with zones

I'm not having any problems with it on Mac OS X. Lots of great new controls.

not sure it is worth buying.

in less than 1 year NIK upgraded from v1 to v2 and wants another $99 for the upgrade for registered user.

pricing is not realistic for a PS plugin

Hi, I'm from Nik and saw your post. Thanks for the report - definitely not good and not what we intended! As you might imagine, we tested quite extensively with your versions of Photoshop and lots of people are using it already.

We would love the opportunity to help sort this out and get you working with our software — would you mind filing a quick support request at http://www.niksoftware.com/supportrequest with more info? It's the weekend here on the West coast of the USA, but I definitely want to get it in our queue to respond.

Thanks, Kevin

Hi - full disclosure: I'm from Nik. Silver Efex Pro 1.0 first shipped in July 2008. Since then we've also provided registered owners with free Lightroom, Aperture, and 64-bit releases.

I hope you have a chance to give the new version a try!

Best, Kevin

klarue,

I have the Silver Efex Pro version 1 and a few other of nik's plugins. And I really like them. But why do you charge people from different countries very different prices when downloading the software from your website And I'm not talking about any VAT or tax. Especially when you don't even charge many of them in their own currency !!!

Hi Lars - Thanks for your message and kind words - I think you're really going to love Silver Efex Pro 2.

Pricing is really not my department nor can I influence decisions in this area. But I would like to make sure I understand what you are saying so that I can pass it along to our executives in charge of those decisions: I know we serve Thailand through the U.S. shopping cart however I believe the price we charge is in USD and it is the same dollar amount regardless of region.

Is the issue you raise solely related to the difference in price due to currency exchange rates?

Thanks for helping me understand. Kevin

No the issue is not due to currency exchange rates. As an example you charge the customers from Europe the same amount in Euro as you charge your costumers in the USA in US dollars.
The Silver Efex Pro 2 cost,

USA 199,95 US dollar
Europe 199,95 Euro
Australia 279,95 dollar

The complete collection cost 599 US dollars from the USA. 599 Euro from Europe. And 949 dollars from New Zealand

That's a big difference. And that's without including any exchange charges.
If I buy other software or plugins from B&H, Adorama or other website shops in the USA, I always pay the same amount as the US costumers

Ahhh... I see your point now. Here's what I think is going on: The European price includes VAT (so the price of the product itself is actually *lower*). Australia and New Zealand are serviced by our distributor CR Kennedy who set their own prices according to the region they serve. I will pass along to our sales manager your complaint and if there is a different explanation for the price discrepancy (of which I'm not aware), I will post that here.

Thanks, Kevin

The VAT is very different in the Europen countries. Even in the EU countries the VAT is different. So if it was that, you would not have the same price for all countries in Europe. The price difference is also a LOT more between the USA and Europe than any European country has in VAT.

Fair enough - will be passing all of this along to our U.S. and EU sales managers. Thanks for the explanation. Best, Kevin

Kevin,

I purchased the Complete Collection for Lightroom/Aperture about three weeks ago (and it's great, incidentally). My understanding is that I get a free upgrade to Silver Efex Pro 2. Can you confirm? Thanks in advance.

Bob

Bob - you absolutely qualify for a free update (and thanks for your business!).

If you purchased a box from Nik or from a reseller, please make sure you have registered at our site so we have your email address tied to the version 1.0 product key. If you purchased electronically from us, you would have already received an email - they were all sent out by the end of the day on Friday with the exception I'm told of a few dozen where there were slight problems in the auto-script; those are being handled manually.

If you have to register, it may take a few days for the script to "catch you," so if you're in a hurry please don't hesitate to give us a call.

Thanks again and best of luck with your photography! Kevin

"But why do you charge people from different countries very different prices when downloading the software from your website And I'm not talking about any VAT or tax..."

i suppose the short answer would be 'because they do'. it's their prerogative as a business to set their own pricing, or decide that they don't want to set different prices for each of the 50 countries in europe. the long answer might have something to do with the cost of doing business in more socialist-minded countries. (e.g., my home - austria - places, among other things, heavy taxes on business profits, which american businesses often don't have to shoulder. VAT is only one of many numbers to consider.)

also, that's an odd argument to say that you're charging the european end user more simply because 199EUR is exchange-wise worth more than 199USD. if someone is earning 100,000USD per year and spending 199USD on a nik product, how is that (where it's nik's problem to fix) fundamentally different than earning 100,000EUR (137,000USD) per year and spending 199EUR (273USD) on a nik product. take it up with your boss if you aren't getting paid enough, and your elected officials if you don't like your national taxing system, i suppose.

"Especially when you don't even charge many of them in their own currency!!!"

this makes it sound more like a pride issue, which kevin might do well to steer clear of.

cheers

If we buy it in the same shop the price should be the same also. Just like it is at B&H, RRS, Adorama and all other American shops. It would be different if we bought it in our own countries. Then Nik would have their prerogative to sell it for a different price in every country. And they also do that in those countries that are selling their software. I don't mind that. But if 5 people come to the same shop and buy it, the price should be the same. Whatever nationality they have. Just like whatever color of the skin or religion they have.
