p.183 #4 · What is your most recent (alt) lens purchase?
My most recent purchase is a Contax G 45mm f/2 Planar. I'm digging it, through I can't quite decide if I like my Contax C/Y 50/1.7 more. Better in a lot of areas, but it seems to be missing something I can't put my finger on.
Focusing is more of a chore than it is with my Contax G 28mm. Anyone ever lubricated one of these before?

Thanks. To go along with the Vivitar Series 1 and the Tokina ATX, I also have the Canon EF 70-200 f/4L and the EF 70-200/2.8L, so I asked myself do I really need the FD 80-200 f/4L. Then I realized that it was a stupid question and went for it.

Mike, you will not be disappointed; I purchased my first one new in December of 1987, after getting the 100-300mm f5.6L. I picked up another one at a tag sale in CT for cheap-cheap, with negligible wear, near mint. It is very smooth to zoom & focus, and has wonderful color and OOF rendition. It holds its' own against any other MF zooms in that range, hand's down, so enjoy!

I have the newer M mount version and I find it works very well actually. The corners are somewhat dark and a little purplish, but using LRs flatfield plug it clears right up. Very sharp and contrasty, I really like the lens. I am getting my best results at f8.

I also went FF Nikon recently. My FX purchases were relatively alt but not classical: Sigmas 35/1.4 Art and 70/2.8 macro. These are modern designs with AF and killer sharpness. There are many 35mm primes on my shelf, but the "Art" is the one I have waited a lifetime to see: a high-tech monster. The macro ain't too shabby, either.

If that is the case, I would go straight for the 300mm f4 L, not the zoom. It is excellent wide-open, and center-edge peaks at f6.3 (in my case), and has a decent rotating tripod collar, built-in sliding/locking lens hood.

So I got the tool, and trimmed it down so I could tighten the focusing ring. After a little fiddling around, I figured out how to set the infinity again, and now it is ready to go. I have to say I am quite surprised how sharp this lens is in the centre. This is not a modern design, so it must have been breathtakingly good for its time. I still try to avoid the "bubble-ish" boke it can spit out sometimes, but the boke is otherwise very beautiful, and I like the colours so far. Hopefully more tomorrow.

Years ago i had a 50 F1.4 on my SL. So i guess mine was an early one, as the SL was very new at the time. That is one outstanding sharp optic.

Yes, same optics, although it might have been a different version. There is an earlier version with the fat body, narrow filter thread, add-on hood, and the one I have with the built-in hood.
