I am sure you can stick an extension tube to reduce the MFD.
Can't wait for the pre-order taking to start! I will book one and worry about how to pay for it later!
This is the most exciting news since Canon went dSLR!

So I figured out the weight to be between 2.6-3.1kg at more than $7,000 (Nikkor 200-400mm VR II's 3.4kg @ $6,800).
Now I wonder what the minimum focusing distance would be. Would it be the same as the EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM (1.5m), EF 200mm f/2L IS USM (1.9m) or Nikkor 200-400mm VR II (2m)

Indeed!
Who says Canon is run by marketers? If that were really true, then they would have waited to announce this lens until after we had all upgraded to the new Mark II superteles!

I really wish they did. It would have been better if they announced updates to the 35L, 135L, 180L Macro and the 400/5.6L

Let us not forget 24-70L II.
Based on the advice I got from that Canon Rumour guy and his pal Canongarcon, I sold my 24-70L as well as 28-70L in anticipation of an updated zoom. Where the heck is it ?
yes the amount of interest will please Canon for sure. The inside teleconverter is brilliant if it works well. It will be interesting to see what hesitation limits during focus are compared to a regular 1.4x. May be none! WOW!
I had heard about it about 2 months ago and didn't believe the rumors either! they did a good job hiding it from the pubic.
I've considered the 400 DO many times. I knew I'd be using a teleconverter alot, to achieve better than what I already had, and I was tired of teleconverter shooting, so bought a used 500f4 is instead. That's one sharp, beautiful lens, much sharper than the 400DO. There have been times when I needed shorter. If I can get out of that situation, plus all the teleconverter changes, I'd be thrilled.
To have that one 200-400 lens, nullifying the equipment carrying problems with all the heavy lenses is a deal breaker for me. [that is if it's under 7 lbs.] The old 300 2.8is is 5.8 lbs, the 500f4.is weighs about 8.6 lbs. The 300 with 2x weighs almost the same as the 500....believe me I have been through it all to find a lighter set up. If this new lens solves this, I will be thrilled. Hell, I'd even hoc my car! lolol.
Image quality and weight are the biggies for me.
Yes, I have even tried my 70-200f4IS with the new 2x, and image quality plus focus speed becomes an issue again. Basically nothing replaces the 500 quality right now that is lighter.
I know it will be heavier than the 400DO. That is lighter than the 300 2.8. It's expensive though and not quite as good an investment as the 500. Thats why I chose lugging the 500 around. I did fine until recently.

Sooner or later it'll come out probably with more than 4 stops of IS!

I predict that the next rendition of the 24-70 will hit the market along with the next full frame body. In the meantime, I can rent you my 24-70 for a "small" fee.

Sigh... She's beautiful but I can only look, not touch. The price will make it completely un-obtainable for this hobbyist. I'll just put her picture up next to the 500 f4
I can't afford it either, but I figure I'll just rent one when I need it. I've got a safari coming up this summer, and a 3-week rental for a Nikon 200-400 with insurance is around $700-800.

Ha Ha ... if they had announced an upgrade to more prime lenses, other people will be saying they wish that Canon would release a 100-400 II ... and a 200-400/4, as Nikon had done a couple of years ago or however long ago it was. Well, not only did they announce their 200-400/4 but they went one up on Nikon with the integrated extender. Brilliant move Canon!

Hey Linda ... you should look at the 70-200/2.8L II as that is an insanely sharp lens with no appreciable loss of IQ with the 1.4x TC attached ... and I am not even talking about the Mk III version.

I was just thinking on that.
To have these two incredibly sharp fast lenses covering 70-900mm.
70-200 2.8 IS MKII + 1.4x TC when needed and 200-400 + 1.4x TX integrated.
I have to go look at some comparisons now of the new 70-200 f/2.8 MKII and 70-300 f/4L, maybe it would be better combo for the field when I can plan to not to need f/2.8.

Of course it won't be released until PMA at the earliest, which is 8 months away.
I wonder why they didn't design the mk II superteles with built-in 1.4x TC too. Saves a lot of hassle.
Weight/cost. I am thinking Canon really wanted to show off their ability to shave off 20+% of lens weight.
I would have also preferred that they integrate the TC's as well. If I knew this was possible this would have been my #2 on my wishlist.
