I'd say $7k minimum, wouldn't be surprised to see it go as high as $9k though.

yeah sad to say, you'd like to think it could be $3500 but hah this sounds much neater than the nikon and that one is twice $3500 so I think you are correct

actually thinking about it i dont think this is the new 100-400, the size, price are just in differnt leagues

maybe pick 6 lottery numbers 6,6,6 6,6,6 would be the deal that would manage something like this

Please reconsider and keep the 300? I can understand selling the others--they're no faster than the new lens--but the 300 is still a full stop faster. I love this lens so much I have a hard time imagining anyone else wanting to sell theirs Though if I'm lowballing the MSRP, I think you still might not break even if you sold all three.

I have not used the 300/2.8 IS in over 6 years.

The current Nikon 200-400 price is $6,799 at B&H. Hopefully, it will be somewhere close.

p.2 #4 · Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS announced

London, UK, 7th February 2011 – Canon today announces the development of a telephoto zoom lens featuring an integrated focal length extender – the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4x. The lens will be displayed for the first time during CP+, held in Yokohama, Japan.

Designed for Canon’s leading range of EOS Digital SLR cameras, the new lens will be an ideal addition for sports and wildlife photographers, offering exceptional flexibility with a built-in 1.4x extender that creates an increased focal range of 280 – 560mm.

Perfect for photographers who require high performance, fast aperture and a flexible telephoto range, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4× will enable photographers to shoot a greater breadth of subjects using a single lens, delivering the best possible image quality at all focal lengths.

Developed as a new addition to Canon’s acclaimed L-series of professional lenses, the new lens will offer an unsurpassed combination of versatility, first-class optical performance and an enhanced weather-proof construction. The model will be released as part of Canon’s continued development of its EF lens line-up, offering enhanced performance and improved functions that cater for the needs of photographers from beginners through to professionals.

The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4x is scheduled for launch during 2011.

Looks like the 100-400 can be retired !!

The internal TC will probably add at least $500, yet that is worth it.

It will be at least as expensive as the Nikon -- likely more, since it has the integrated TC.
Probably very nice and sharp. Entirely out of my budget. To those who need it and can afford
it, this looks to be a very nice release.

Canon continues to take care of its white-lens users.

Come on people...enough with the high-price guessing game.

"Even at $9000, it will be worth it".

Sheesh...you think Canon reps don't read this board??

FOR THE RECORD: if this lens is more than $4K, I'm selling all of my gear and moving to Nikon.

p.2 #10 · Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS announced

As much as I welcome the announcement, I personally don't have much use for this lens. It's going to be heavy, expensive, and it won't replace my 300, since I find f/2.8 is a lifesaver. I'm mostly a prime shooter, anyway.

Still, it's good to see Canon addressing the perceived gaps in their EF lineup, to compete against Nikon's offerings. This lens might become the new favorite airshow lens for the tripod shooters, given its focal length flexibility (200-560mm). I think the built-in extender is a nice (though not entirely new) development, a welcome first for the EF mount. I hope to see more innovations in the near future.

Now Canon zoom shooters can cover a huge focal length range with four lenses: EF 16-35/2.8L II, 24-70/2.8L, 70-200/2.8L IS II, 200-400/4L IS 1.4x, giving every focal length from 16/2.8 to 560/5.6. If Canon were to develop a 14-24/2.8, that would be even more impressive. And if we throw in the 8-15/4L fisheye....

I wouldn't think its worth it at $9k though. But it will be undeniably an extremely desirable lens for a lot of outdoors shooting genres !

Yes, it's nice to see the innovation. I'm not sure it counters the laws of physics, but an extender design that DIDN'T lose a stop of light would be remarkable.

Doubt this will retire the 100-400. Doubt there will be many "beginners" that can afford this either.

Currently, I'm on the Sigma 12-24, 24-70L, 70-200 f/2.8 ISL. An additional 200-400 f/4 would make my zoom focal range more than adequate for non-specialised situations !

BUT ... that is assuming I can afford this new monster !

Sweet! New toys are always nice...with the newer super tele primes and zoom coming out means more people will be selling their mark1 super tele's in fluxing the used market. Hoping the mark 1's go for more affordable prices as they are still pretty top notch glass.

"With the teleconverter engaged on FF body, it becomes a 280-560mm F5.6 lens."

When used on a 1.6x body it is 320-640mm native and 450-900mm with built in 1.4x tele engaged.

When used on a 1.4x body it is 280-560mm native and 400-800mm with built in 1.4x tele engaged.

This lens should also be popular for video shooters too with the built in 1.4x TC.

I would think it's possible to dump the 300/2.8 for this lens. The Nikon guys are able to keep their shutters up with their 200-400 and the high-ISO capabilities of the D3s. We have the MKIV which isn't that far behind in terms of ISO. Having the ability to zoom in and fill the frame will often throw out the background as well/better than f/2.8. The IQ from the Nikon zoom is excellent and Canon's 70-200 MKII shows us Canon can make a prime-rivaling zoom.

Although this lens may make the 300/2.8 seem like a flyweight.
