I thought about the eyes as windows thing a day or two ago (before I saw your post), and spent a frustrating couple of hours trying to get something close to the very first pic I took with my new camera (below). This is NOT an entry, it was taken in December and isn't eligible. Tried and tried to get something similar, but the dog wasn't in the mood.

I can see your dog's eyes working well for this. I bet it was difficult to get the shot cause I had a lot of trouble with a willing human subject. I shot with a 180mm macro lens and the DOF was about paper thin. I had to just set a manual focus and then lean forward and back while shooting off some bursts to get the outside view in-focus. I worked on this over a couple day period of time.
