No, "onion rings" are due to aspherical elements, not due to poor cementing.
See page 32 of the Zeiss article on bokeh and DOF.
And some discussion about it in this thread https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/880700/
Edit: found a thread opened by you, with examples of onion rings: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1012875/

Hmm interesting, I think I've seen onion ring bokeh on lenses without aspherical elements...

Had to get out with my new ZM 35 2.8, even though the skies were dark.

Just for you, Jason, some JPEGs with my G 28mm.

You are making it tough Philipe! Can't decide between the Gs or some ZM glass. The Gs would certianly be considerably cheaper

I had the ZMs, but, this time around, I will stick with Gs (21, 28, 45, 90). My issue is 35mm, one of my favorite focal lengths, where the G line is weak... so I will get "something else". Maybe a CV in native E-mount when they come out.

do you need a 35mm when you have the 28 and 45? or if you mean 35mm equiv, do you need a 35mm equiv when you have a 32.5mm equiv and 42mm equiv?

Good question, coming from the man with a thousad lenses...
I was talking about 35mm native, or 50mm equivalent, because I also intend to buy the 24mm ZA f:1.8, which I expect to be my walk-around. If the NEX 7 is good enough, then I would dump my DSLR system altogether, with something like ZM 18, G21, ZA 24,maybe, if I feel the "need", CV35, G 45 and G 90, and probably also the Sony G zoom, and be done with it. Lots of choices, and in a small package.

touché.

i do have a lot of lenses, but only in my favorite focal lengths. presently i have zero 35mm lenses. i often get multiples of those focal lengths and keep ones with unique characteristics (usually drawing style or size). i found the g 35/2 to not be different enough in drawing style, size, or focal length from the g 45/2 and sold it (same thing for my pen f 38/1.8 versus 42/1.2). i don't think i would have any desire for a 35mm though if i had a good compact 28mm to match my 45mm, unless it had some special properties (that CV 35/1.2 vII is tempting me).

I have taken a lot of boring images using the CV 35/1.2 II. I have taken some good or very good also, but I used the boring ones for an in-depth check of how the CV35/1.2 works with a Nex-5.
Not a Nex-5N or C3 or 7 unfortunately, a plain five is what I have. I put parts of the stuff together and posted a review of the Nex-5 + CV35/1.2 combo at DPR, anyone interested in this outdated topic can click here. Don't expect beauty though, already I told you it was boring.

Philippe, you should definitely get a Contax 35/1.4 for your NEX! Quite small compared to the ZE.

Thank you Ryan!

Philippe: I have the CV 35/1.2 V1 in M mount and can bring it to Berlin on the 8th along with a Novoflex E adapter if you want to test it.

No doubt the size is right, Carsten, but all I have read about G lenses says that the 35 was not bad at all but not that great. Certainly not as good as the "classics": 21, 28, 45, 90. So for now I will hold off on that focal length and see how I do with 24/28/45. Right now I tend to shoot with very few lens changes anyhow, as you saw in Berlin.

No, no, the 35/1.4, not the G lens. The one with its own thread

I wish I never had sold my v1. I use the v2 as my standard lens on my Nex-5 and from what I can see the difference between the versions is very small. Great lenses. I'll bring mine and also a Hawk helicoid focusing adapter.

Not only a dedicated thread, the lens also has its own helicoid...
And a great lens it is.

Philippe - definitely look at the Nokton 35 f/1.2 VII...it has become my favorite lens. It is not just a lens for wide open f/1.2-f/1.4 shooting, but stopped down to f/4 or so and used as a landscape lens it is hard to beat...with anything. As far as the Contax 21, how is that on the NEX-5N? Color edges? I was thinking about purchasing the ZM 21 C Biogon, but not sure how the edges will look with that one.

A few more 35 Nokton II shots....
