I'm new to Sony. I just bought an a6500. It's paired with E 50 1.8 (serious bang for the buck IMO) and Sony/Zeiss 24 1.8 (aka Zony). Enjoying the kit so far. Very different from the Canon 5d3. The AF system seems to be quite sophisticated and has taken some effort to understand entirely. That said, I'm beginning to find the AF configurations that will work best for the types of photography I enjoy....which is quite the mix. I'd love to hear from others regarding what settings work best for their photography. Here are some random thoughts and questions to get things started...
- While not the most sophisticated the touchscreen is nice and functions very well. You do have to put some time and effort into understanding how it works though. Anyone know if firmware updates could add to the functionality of the TS? i.e. swiping while previewing images. Maybe I'm dreaming!?!
- I have found that the Zony 24mm does not support all AF functions. In movie mode two functions are not available...1) DMF, only AF-C and Manual. There is a work around using touch spot focus if anyone is interested. 2) AF drive speed. On the 50 three speeds are available. Anyone else have this lens and can corroborate these findings?
- I like to zoom in when previewing images. Is there not a way to have an image zoom to only 50% rather than zoom all the way into 100%? This was a function that could be customized on other camera bodies. ON that note, has anyone been able to program anything other than the wheel for zooming in and out of previewed images. I don't like the wheel on this camera. Too stiff.
- Anyone use ND filters in continuous AF for spots photography? I like shooting wide apertures but the 1/4000 max SS is a limiting factor in bright conditions.....i.e. sunny ski days!
That's it for now. Hopefully with time there will be others picking up this camera and contributing.
Great feedback and images @idsurfer! I don't think there's a way to modify the initial 100% zoom preview, you just rotate the control wheel to zoom out.
ETA: Any suggestions for best image upload settings on this forum? I went to the FAQ, but I couldn't get any links to work. Perhaps they're down for site maintenance.
Shot in extremely cold temps in the Yukon about a week ago. Daytime highs were only minus10F. a6500 performed flawlessly, including one outing where it got completely encrusted in snow for about 30 minutes.
I posted these over in the FE images. I'm extremely happy with the A6500. I'm still using my A7 for landscapes for now but I think the A6500 is a great little all around camera.
