Just to demonstrate about which DOF we are typically talking: Nex-3, Leitz Macro-Elmar-R 60mm f/2.8, probably at f/8 or f/11, handheld, raw conversion LR at standart settings, otherwise straight OOC:
thanks ahamb and akul! i think the swirl is definitely an acquired taste. i could do without it in this shot, but really like it in some.

Well, this is a situation where no peaking in the world will help, even the best viewfinder will not. I just had to go to the postoffice and took the Nex an my new Macro-Elmar-R with me because there is a nice park with flowers besides the postoffice. Obviously I was attempting to shoot hand hold at close distances (useless). With magnification switched on I could see the peaking red moving on 1mm objects going back and forth, just because I could not hold the camera still enough. Even f/11 does not help too much, the DOF is just so extremely thin at those distances. This is simply tripod and liveview territory, whatever camera you use....Show more →
may i recommend in the absence of a tripod (or with a tripod on a windy day) using speed priority and burst mode while liveview is magnified. it wastes a lot of frames but you can usually get exactly the shot you wanted for one of them. if you take the time to zoom out and frame you'll never get the focus you want.
I know, sebboh, I know . But still, look at the DOF above, should be around 1 or 2 millimeters. Can't hold that still with my old hands in whatever mode I use
You are too kind, Philippe! I am just learning the Nex and did not shoot much macro in my live. I see those images more than experiments in the moment, but must admit, that I truly love that Macro-Elmarit. I could stare hours on the rendering in the white of the flower in the first shot above
Thank you Boris. I even ordered a Novoflex adapter for that Macro-Elmarit yesterday because (you know since when ;-) ) I couldn't stand my el cheapo R > EOS and EOS > Nex adapter solution any more
