It can be tough to nail shallow DOF, candid street shots with manual focus. For starters, HCB tended to use 1/125 at f8 with the lens prefocused to about 4 meters, and he adjusted from there. Of course, you could try f5.6, since we're on aps-c.
That's kind of what I've been working on as well. My problem is that I'm trying to judge distance while I'm walking. That's not working even with 1/250. I guess I should just stop and take that variable out of the equation.
Yeah, also keep in mind that focusing scales of manual lenses on NEX can be a little wonky. You may want to get out a tape measure and mark on your barrel where 3 or 4 meters is.

Your two are both pretty nice. I especially like the red in the sky on the first one.
