I choose the NEX-5 mostly because of the magnesium body and the IR remote option. There isn't a remote release option for the NEX-3, wired or wireless.

Smaller and lighter, strong and solid magnesium alloy construction, tilt-able LCD, higher video spec, ability to use wireless remote. All worth the additional $100 to me.

i chose the NEX-3 because it was more than $150 cheaper for me (the big reason), i actually prefer mp4 and 720p for my video needs and it seemed like it might fit in a pocket better without a lens (smaller grip). the only thing i miss is ir remote capability - shooting in bulb mode is impossible with the NEX-3.

It appears that you can. You can set the camera to spot meter with an alternative lens attached, and it does seem to meter differently compared to matrix metering, and meter consistent with what I would expect from a spot meter.

If I recall correctly, it does have a spot meter mode. I haven't tried it however, or felt the need for it. Using the NEX is really a "what you see is what you get" experience. I mostly shoot manual, and adjust either shutter speed or aperture until I like what I see on the LCD screen. That's part of what I enjoy most about using my NEX-5.

Zeiss ZE lenses don't have an aperture ring, so using them on NEX will be a challenge. From what I understand, you can mount the lens on a Canon camera, set the aperture, and then remount on NEX and it will hold the aperture. Or, there is a adapter out there that has aperture blades built in,.but it doesn't seem that great from what I've seen.
Ultimately, you're better off with ZF, ZS, ZK or Contax C/Y.
I've read a lot of post on NEX, and i ended with the feeling that it is possible to have brilliant lenses (MF) and decent size (NEX philosophy) in a normal/short telephoto range like 55mm to 90mm equivalent.
This means of course using 35mm to 58mm lenses + 1.6X APS-C factor.
So my main interest in the NEX is using it as a very small lightweight, with high quality lens in the 35-40mm (already converted). Oh...and preferably at least f2.8.
So do we have a 20mm to 25mm f2/2.8 small and lightweight lens that can be used on the NEX without corner color shifts or excessive loss of sharpness?
My lightweight standard is a Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 M mount with the corresponding 8mm adapter.
Canon mount adapter is so large that makes me avoid EF lens. Or FD.
