Beautiful, Herb.

Here is the sunset from top of Mt. Tamalpais on Jan 1st, 2012.

Some friends and I day hiked from Stinson Beach to the East Peak and were treated to a classic Cali Sunset along with a few other people who waited at the top with us for the show... great way to start the year.

Lovely image Jacob, to remember a nice day hiking with friends.

beautiful! i was just in muir woods today myself and was amazed how many NEX cameras i saw. i'm used to just seeing p&s and various canons and nikons. i guess they really are selling well.

Thank you, Sebboh, Herb.

The weather feels almost like early summer right now (if you're in CA) doesn't it? There were a ton of hikers out on the 1st but I didn't see a single NEX. At the last backpacking meetup I attended with a group of ultralight hikers there were 3 or 4 NEX 5/5N in about 30 people... pretty high percentage there.

I did get quite a few questions about my camera once we got to the peak and I set up my tripod. A few people asked what it was and wanted to know more about it, one couple had been researching it and asked about it, another guy was into LF/MF and was curious about my 'small camera'. He knew it wasn't a P&S but couldn't figure out what it was. I ended up explaining the whole thing a few times. I noticed a guy in the background with a Minolta (I think) film SLR who seemed to be listening in. I think the CV 90 and camera combo was drawing attention... that long, slim, sliver lens on what appears to be a P&S peaks human curiosity

Can you handhold that combo, Jacob?

Interesting. I went for a run at dusk along the Marina in San Francisco yesterday and passed two college age young women walking with NEXs. I just got a quick glance, but one had the kit lens and the other had some type of adapted lens (with lens hood). I thought that was pretty interesting.

Yes, I think so. All of the shots I've posted thus far with the 90 have been hand held, except the above pano. I try to keep the shutter at a minimum of 1/200 though.

The lens is fairly light, and really about 1/3 of the length is the hood, I think it's sort of right on the margin of what I'd want to attempt to hand hold, and MF using the assist is not the easiest thing, it takes effort to keep the image from being too jumpy. I figure this has to be easier than focusing a G 90 via an adapter.. and if people can manage that...

Indeed. Girl with adapted lens sounds like my kind of girl
There seem to be a handful of SF / Bay Area people here. Maybe we should think about a meet up one day for FMSFBANEXUsers

Yes, if I were younger and not married, this would have been a great conversation starter.

I'm up for a Bay area FM Alt/NEX meet.

My computer audibly groaned while trying to munge 20 RAWs this morning. It needs a memory upgrade. However, I messed up focus on that set. Maybe turned the focus ring while I shot?

sebboh wrote:
i used to just use the merge to panorama function in lightroom to take the raws to photoshop, but i still just have PS4, which can't handle raws from the NEX. so now i export them as tiffs and send them to photoshop. jpegs work fine too, i just haven't noticed much time savings with using smaller files.

Thanks for the Kind words, i´m using Sony LA-EA2 Adapter, so it´s Sony Alpha Mount.

The ZF 100 is also converted with Leitax to Sony Alpha Mount.

Nex 7 / Sony-Zeiss 24 f/1.8 @ f/11

As on the Nex 5n it behaves as a fantastic macro lens as well.
On the Nex 5n I found f/7.1 optimum this close, with the Nex 7 it is more towards f/11.
Herb

intriguing, i'm not sure about at/near mfd, but all my lenses that i consider sharp show a noticeable degradation in sharpness stopping down beyond f/5.6. i would think diffraction would be more evident on the NEX-7 (note i'm using an original NEX-3).

yeah, i think the reason jpegs aren't any faster for me is that my computer is so slow and memory limited that even jpegs overload it (PS always sucks up swap). hugin is much less of a memory hog (and it's free) as it doesn't try to store every single image in memory simultaneously.

Not quite f/11... The optimum performance across the frame for the Nex 7 and the 24 mm is around f/8. At the closest distance I found f/9.0 the best, but this is hairsplitting. Most of the time the centre sharpness and contrast is already optimum at f/4 or f/5.6 but for optimum corner performance it takes often f/8 at the cost of a slight centre drop in performance.
Indeed from f/11 in most cases diffraction sets in. But I make images and compare them and do not decide beforehand that f/11 is worse.
I found for instance the Voigtländer Super Wide Heliar 15 performs optimum already wide open on film camera's. On the Nex 5 it takes f/11 to get the sharpest corners.

Seriously I cant see how an 1.8 lens can have optimum performance at F/8. Shouldnt one get another (and possibly smaller) lens for that? A lens with F/1.8 has optimum performance at F/1.8 or close and just needs to be sharp-enough at a big-enough part of the frame.

I would agree. I've been a little surprised at the f/8 and f/11 apertures used in the lens comparisions on these NEX threads.

Playing with 24ZA at sundown. The lens feels like a nice match to the system, I just have to get used to the width of the 24 since I've mostly been shooting my OM50.

f/5.6

f/1.8 (used AF, would likely have been sharper with MF). Hope my animal shots are not boring you to tears. A bit of vignette added in post on this one.

ah, your talking corner sharpness. yes, my sony 16mm continues to sharpen in the corners till f/11. the center gets worse stopping down from f/5.6 though, so it makes choosing an optimal aperture a game of compromise. my normal lenses mostly get worse everywhere after f/5.6.

michelle - the shots from the zeiss 24 look very nice and i like bird shots especially with wide angles. it looks like a good performer close up from the shots i've seen with the exception of a bit of loCA.
