The result was partly surprising (to me that is). As a test like this is far from perfect I was hoping for some clues and Indeed, I got that. Comments are welcome.

the lux looks extremely good wide open, but gets bested at f/5.6 by both the cv and the zm to my eye. i like the color from the lux the best (cv is second place). from f/2 on the zm appears to be the best for sharpness to me.

Thanks for posting this test. A question though. Aside from testing, why would you ever choose to shoot a scene like this wide open?

I see the same. It pretty much matches the MTF charts. The other lenses did a bit better than expected. Now all this is at quite a long distance. Focusing closer may give another result (except for the high contrast and freedom from aberrations wide open, there is some Leica magic going on.

I understand you ask. There may be some reasons... like the light is low, you need a short shutter time, you would like some mix of sharpness and glow, whatever. For me it is about knowing my gear. If not printing big f/2 should be enough for a decent image in this case. Without trying it in a somewhat controlled way I wouldn't really know that.

wow, that's quite game changing! The ZM all the way then.. I thought since the new 24 was specifically designed for the NEX, it ought to be better than the M lens. sigh..for all that cash and big size, I thought the Zeiss engineers didn't skimp anything in the IQ department.

Herb, really appreciate your effort here. thanks

For shooting 10 fps in Speed Priority Continuous mode it does not make a difference in speed regarding turning on or off the Electronic First Curtain.
Turning the EFC on in Continous Advance mode will make shooting a hair faster.
I leave it on all the time. You will have a faster response time and when shooting macro from tripod you will get sharper images. I tested this extensively. It makes less noise as well.

TY Herb for your reply.

In my reading I had the idea that at high burst rates the first curtain could not get out of the way in time and some sublte ghosting might occur---probably the wrong way to say it.

Basically traces of one image might end up on the the next.

Why is there the option to turn it off at all? There must be times when it's better off, no?

TY for your test shots.

@Jonas

nice series with the 35s TY. The ZM really rips at f/2, but I was surprised ow well the CV 1.2 cleaned up at 5.6

This distance is always interesting---ultimate is if you can get it in the lower corners as well. Would have loved to see f/8 too---only because it is becoming apparent that that's where some of the RFs will shoot the best landscapes.

Charlie,
Those shots of the play are excellent. That's one of the best images I've ever seen from the CV 50/1.1.

Uhoh7,

To turn the EFC off is required according to Sony when you use wide apertures and high shutterspeeds. This could result to unsharp images.
Also for some Konica/Minolta lenses it must be off because of wrong exposures.

I could understand the bit about wrong exposures on Sony/minolta lenses on an A-mount camera, since the iris has to open up first and it's mechanical. Hence, if the first curtain is too fast, then it would not be completely opened. However, I don't get the first one. Why would a wide aperture, fast shutter speed need a mechanical first curtain?

Xbarcelo,
My info is from Sony's owners manual. I haven't seen any issues in practice with the EFC on.
How these possible issues exactly work technically I do not know. Some specialists say it could
have something to do with clearing the photosites before one takes another image.

Maybe this link is of any help or have a call to Sony headquarters :-)

Quick question on the above images. I ran them through my standard processing, but the Leica images are a lot more saturated right out of the camera, do you find these over done? Comments appreciated.

Why post so small? London phonebooths tends to be very red and oxidized copper have a special luster which I would be fine in replicating with sat/vibrance if need should arise. But I dont know what Im looking at, it's out of context and I cant get a feel for the details with images in this size.

just my cents, thanks for sharing
