Three images here. First, a shot with the 5N and CV 35mm 1.2 taken at f8.

The other two are a test, which I kind of botched. I have a Leica R 90mm Elmarit, and also a Contax G Zeiss 90. Both shots were taken at f8. I'm furious with myself, because I didn't get the focus in the same spot. I tried to focus on the far left column, but the Leica image focal point is a little further out. It is amusing, because although focussing with the adapter on the CZ is a real pain, that was the one that I actually got exactly right. I've got to get better at this.

Anyway, I should probably sell one of these 90mm lenses because I can't afford both. I'd love to get comments from anybody about the relative merits of each.

Thanks Herb,
Seems more or less a wash between the ZM and ZA. The autofocus makes it an easy choice for me.

Thanks very much Thatspeck! I really do like the CV 35 1.2.

Thatspeck,

Sofar there is little to choose for me image quality wise between the Nex 24 and the ZM 25.
Both perform admirably on my Nex 5n.
Autofocus is in general not so important to me. However the magnification possible, i.e. how close I can get to my subject, is important to me. I like wide angle, wide aperture and close focus distance combined very much. The Sony goes to 0,25x and the ZM to 0,06x.
A huge advantage for the ZM is that it is a splendid lens on full frame 35mm format.
Because I hope one day there will be a full 35mm kind of Nex 7 camera on the market.

When the weather improves I will do a little more tests regarding infinity behaviour of both lenses.

One more comment on the importance of autofocus to me.

In general everything that goes automatic in cameraland, does not go the way I want it.
Autofocus systems in the camera never know what I like to be in focus.

When I have a small centre spot as autofocus point, that works fast and can be calibrated I will get already more keepers. However in the case of the above close up of Fred the cat, the Sony combo will never focus on the eyes properly. All my autofocus shots have the iris of the eyes out of focus. This is because the centre spot that is used for focussing is in this case too large.
It focusses on the hairs around the eyes. So you will need a manual adjustment.
Fortunately due too the automatic switch to manual mode with magnification as soon as you turn the lens, as well as the focus peaking it is still a breeze with the Nex camera's.

But if the Zeiss ZM lens would be able to focus as closely I could make the image with the same speed.

That are very interesting developements uhoh7! There is one crucial point that I did not mention yet. The Sony Nex 5n is the only camera on the market (with the c3) that can accept many brands of lenses (with adapters) and extract a lot of quality from these lenses. Also from many difficult wide angle lenses that tend to show colorshifts towards the edges on all other compact system camera's.

Herb, you need a Hawk's helicoid adapter for your M lenses! That'll get that mfd down to around .3m.

I hope Pentax doesn't make a Samsung blunder and make the registration too long for M lenses. A Pentax 135 mirrorless sounds great!

Also, while the 5N is better than most in the corners with M lenses, Sony really needs to ax the AA filter, so we get GXR-like corners. I'm hoping MaxMax will do it to my 5N, but they haven't responded to me.

Thanks for the Hawk's info Douglas.

I am not confident that removing the AA filter will solve all issues. There is also a UV / Infrared filter / protective glass. The sharpness available with the GXR is partly related to the AA filter, but the corner behaviour has more to do with the microlenses and the glass layers on top of the sensor. These layers must be as thin as possible for some lens designs to produce sharp corners. I am not a sensor specialist but this is what I understand of it.

Sure thing. The Hawk's adapter is probably my favorite NEX accessory. I've not used another adapter since.

About the AA. The AA and IR glass are usually fused together. Removing the AA filter generally involves removing this filter sandwich and replacing it with a new stand alone IR filter. According to "theSuede," Joakim, who knows these specific parts well, there really isn't any thing too special in the IR filter thickness and micro lens array of the M9, and I think there's a really good chance that removing the AA filter of the NEX could go a long way with rangefinder glass. Now, there could also be some variance in how far away this filter pack is from the sensor itself, and more or less distance could affect astigmatism, so that's what I'm most concerned about, but I think removing the AA filter would certainly help...I just don't know how much it would help. If MaxMax offers it, I may bite for fun.

guys, before we get carried away by the mirrorless FF promise, let's not forget that Penntax don't makes sensors. The key resource here is not the camera manufacturer, but the sensor maker, of whom there are precious few. Pentax' reference to a mirrorless 645D is also a mystery, because mirrorless means, unless it is a very strange way to call a rangefinder, a LiveView camera. This, in turn requires a C-MOS sensor, whereas the 645 uses a CCD from Kodak. Who makes MF C-MOS sensors. I don't know. That makes me take Pentax' promise, as reported, with a grain of salt.

Ever since I used pentax cameras and lenses I take everything they say with a grin of salt. Bit don't you feel a little like a party spoiler?
A LIVE FF camera is what I'm waiting for. If Pentax makes it, and Sony makes the sensor, I don't mind. The Pentax cameras are ergonomically well thought out.

But but but... would Pentax really make a "medium format", the APS-C cameras, their little small sensor thing I forgot the name of and now also a FF camera?

Philippe, I have a ZM Biogon 35/2, like new, in need of a new home. In case you decide for a 35 and are interested in it you may drop me a PM.

Just received my 5n, still trying to figure it out...a bit strange coming drom DSLRs...anyway, first thing I noticed was the long time it stays blocked from one shot to other...it came with a Transcend 16gb SDHC card, which I think is class 10 (there is a 10 written on it,so...). Is it this way or is it the card that it too slugish? Any recommendarions?

The images were made a few minutes after each other in exact the same light condition.

What we can see is that the Zeiss ZM on the right has that typical cooler Zeiss rendering of colors.
The Sony image on the left is warmer and looks just a tiny bit softer.

Besides the slight color difference I think it will be very difficult, if at all, to see any

do you have image review turned on? it shoots 10 fps if you want, so with image review off and drive mode set to speed priority it shouldn't stay blocked long unless you shoot a long burst.

Here are some pictures from last week. I took my NEX-5N and the Sony A900 with me on a trip to San Francisco. I ended up using the NEX most of the time and I'm not sure I'm completely happy with the results. However, my back did thank my decision.

Here's the worst photo technically that I took this afternoon, but the one I find most interesting as it tells a story and you know exactly where it was taken. I had about .1 second to set up as I saw the shot out of the corner of my eye. I had a very difficult time processing this and I'm not happy with the result, but it's the best I could do. NEX 5N and ZM 35c.
