I wouldn't judge framing and focusing on the 5N without trying the EVF.

I really like composing and focusing with the 5N and EVF. What I particularly like is being able to toggle back and forth between 100% view (which is 100% accurate as far as what's framed) and magnified view to get focus spot on (with no focus shift issues since I stop down to my shooting aperture and then frame and focus). I don't think the experience would be the same without the EVF and personally wouldn't want to use the 5N without the EVF unless I was also using a tripod.

The 5N and EVF focus more accurately than AF or MF on my Nikon and Pentax DSLRs and I'm getting so used to the accuracy that I think I'm going to start using my Pentax lenses on my 5N and future NEX 7. I don't have a rangefinder, but I would bet focus accuracy is much higher with the EVF than the rangefinder focus mechanism.

Jacob

Here is the pen wide story. Now this is on the nex-5, but the issue is so extreme I can't believe it would resolve on the 5n.

Pen-f 20/3.5: nice centers, edges, let alone corners soft to the point of fuzziness.

Pen 25/2.8: Phenomenal Centers: I don't think I have a lens sharper in the center than this, including my nikkor 55/3.5 diamond grip. But the sides, let alone corners are very fuzzy.

I suspect its SA from the lens design pure and simple. I say this because it is possible to focus the corners---I should have done this during these test shots today, but did not think of it.

But later I shot this jeep with the new 20 wide open
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6105/6301558700_fa9358afb8_b.jpg
next to it is a red truck with chrome rail on the bed runs to the edge: it is sharp all the way to the edge! Looking a bit more at other samples the 20 is actually quite impressive: you just have to be picky with what you are shooting and take the SA into account.

A few from my trusted NEX-5C & ZM25 combo, while waiting painfully for the 7.

Thanks, gives comfort :-). Thanks also uhoh and michael

Ajay, yes that's about it (selective blurring), you may want to control the transition and give a boost to the colors to strengthen the toy:ishness.

How is the EVF in bright sunlight? That's the only scenario right now where I'm unhappy shooting off of the lcd.

^ works perfectly for me. Now that I have the EVF I only use the LCD for playback. The tilting function is very helpful as well (one advantage of the 5N over the NEX 7).

Charlie, thanks for posting those PEN F shots. I can see that the 25/2.8 is not what I'm after. The 20/3.5 is looking better but it's hard to judge the corners from those.. the trucks do look good though. You got the lens for a song, I would grab one up at that price. With the 'retail' price on these PEN F lenses I think one would either have to find a lucky bargain or be a collector for the purchase to make much sense.

The various Skopar's are starting to look appealing to me. I've seen some photos from the 21, 25, and 35 that are all looking pretty good, especially the 25 and 35. Holding out for a nice used ZM 25 is tempting also tempting.

Are you happy with the image quality from Hasselblad Planar 110mm f2? I used some Hasselblad (Zeiss) lenses on my Nikon D700 before and I didn't fine them to be special for the Nikon sensor.

Jacob, you might just want to bite the bullet and get the best at 20

full size

That's the nFD 20/2.8 and no RF lens will touch it on a digital sensor---well maybe one of those lecias on an M9.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5058/5587810297_7486d8bfc7_z.jpg

I would try to check samples from 5n and cv 21. May it can get this sharp on the sides, but I doubt it. The CV centers are close enough. I doubt there is 20 made today better than this. Incredible coatings. Its fast too and can shoot indoors.

Not small, but not really heavy either. 305 grams. Close focus. etc.

I overpaid at 220USD.

For another 275 you could have what is considered by more than a few to be the best FD lens ever made, bar none, the fairly rare nFD 24/2. It's smaller. On the camera with adapter it's about the size of the kit zoom.

one of the last Canon lenses in FD mount.

The ZM is potenially sharper, but on the nex sensor, no way. This thing will kill it edge to edge. I could be wrong, but not likely.

With these lenses you want very clean copies because the guts can be damaged if they are beat up.

Yeah, even my old Canon FDn 28/2.8 from high school is pretty darned good on my NEX-5. Unfortunately, I'm about small with NEX, so I don't use it often, but quite a decent performer for such a cheapie.

and they are like 60 bucks or less!

These things will be devastating on the nex-7
