Nikon called to say that after replacing the front element, the image is not sharp.
Hence need to replace the whole lens barrel.
Repair cost escalates to about USD $700 !!!
Am I paying the price for an inexperience technician
I think I would say "no thanks, just send it to me as is with the new front element for the original quoted price" and see if it's sharp. I can't imagine it being less sharp than before, unless they screwed something up, which they should fix free if they did.
Sound like some of the tricks El Segundo tried on me.
When I got my D1 back from the "free cleaning" after paying $800 "impact damage" for not being spotless clean, it no longer worked right.
I then sent it to Melville where it was completely refurbished for free.
