Only the AF motor is in the lens, and then only in some lenses.
Your choice, of course, and but my experience is very different. I've bought four long-gun Nikon lenses, and was able to get all of them within a couple of weeks of when I started looking for them. That includes my 500VR.
Actually, all AF Canon lenses has the motor in the lens. They got rid of all the mechanical coupling when they changed to the EF mount in the 80's. That means that the only Canon lenses without a motor in the lens are MF.
The major camera stores here in Sweden have both the 500 and the 600 in stock.
