Sounds like it's been stripped, maybe by repeated use or it had a hard knock on it while angled?
I'd probably check with Nikon for a repair estimate.
If it's too expensive to repair, you could either sell it with the caveat it's pretty much stuck at the default angle (which really wouldn't bother a lot of umbrella shooters), or make it your umbrella / light box stand flash
Well, I am sure there are few people around here who taken them apart. I would not mind trying to repair it myself - I can't see Nikon charging acceptable amount for repair (considering new SB600s are under $200)
I was also given a Gary Fong diffuser as a Bday present, which works surprisingly well (but it also surprisingly big ). So the flash problem is less of a problem, more of an annoyance.
Thanks to google and a some russian discussion board just downloaded a repair manual for SB600. Will make a nice project once I will get a bit more time.
Just enter the numbers into the verification field and push the green button. Wait for countdown to end and download would start automatically.
Hope this helps.
BTW, Google Chrome should be able to translate the site automatically. Probably not perfect, but acceptable. Can't really verify - I turned translation off for Russian, but for German sites it works pretty good.

I have chrome and it did a pretty good job on that site. Definitely enough to understand how to download it.
Thanks for posting them. I did get them to download finally. I found out it was being blocked at my office. Got it to work at home. Unfortunately, I'm the IT guy at work, so I get to blame myself.

I would not blame you too much. Some stuff you get from some Russian sites is quite nasty. While a lot of people can judge pretty good, quite a few still install those wonderful Registry Cleaners and fake Antivirus programs... Now, when I started to think about it, it' not only Russian sites that have that cr@p...
Thanks for posting the links. I just picked up an SB-600 which is missing the diffuser panel. It still zooms in manual mode, but cannot be used in full auto TTL mode at anything but 14mm as the diffuser is missing.
As soon as I find where to buy the diffuser and spring I'll be putting this manual to use!
