I've been in some pretty sketchy areas of the caribbean at night during a wedding and never felt threatened (much more sketchy than my town). Thus, I would never see a reason to carry a handgun. I guess having lived in the slums in Sao Paolo I got used to it and would never feel the need. I'd much rather hand over any possessions than try and defend myself.

In where lies a grey area. having a concealed weapon gives many users a false sense of empowerment, even subconsciously. a proper mental state is required to never ever pull a firearm unless absolutely needed to protect ones life, and that is something that adrenaline doesn't help with in the heat of the moment. if you choose to carry it's on you, just be safe.
proper "training" in my opinion comes into play here more than ever, shooting a gun is very easy. knowing when not to even think about it is another.
Spencer, not to be controversial, but why on earth would you want to hand over your hard earned property to some DB who just wanted to take it from you?
also not to be an ass, but would you just hand over one of your kids to some scum who happened to threaten you for them?
I know gear and kids are not the same thing, but what if that situation arrised?

the safety of your gear is not something worth risking your life for. A loved one is. You sound like you really want to get this gun?
If I were on a shoot where I thought I'd need to draw a gun I don't think I could concentrate on the work. Also bringing models or clients into a place that bad could also be cause for legal trouble when things go wrong.
And seriously a wedding? 200-300 people crowded into a room, your photographing the first dance and see a ninja approaching the happy couple from your peripheral vision, drop your camera lettting it swing on its harness as you spin around drawing your .45 and putting 4-5 rounds towards the ninja killing him while only hitting a few of the guests.

A concealed handgun to there weddings or shoots?
I am getting my a concealed carry permit and am going to carry at shoots and for that matter pretty much everywhere.
I have grown up around guns all my life and feel comfortable with them. Granted no one will know unless its needed.
does anyone else?
todd
I don't carry because it's impossible to get a permit here, but I absolutely would otherwise. Good on you for exercising your rights while you still have some.
The way I see it is someone can rob me, it will just be a pretty much free way for me to upgrade. I really don't see the problem.
Now I am a completely crazy hillbilly SOB and if a bum gave me the instant I'd likely go completely nuts on them. At least thats how I would have done it before I got older and fatter. Now I think I'd just call my insurance guy.
It's seems clear that your mind is made up on this issue, but I know a lot of photographers and have never even heard of this happening. Even if it did, its just not worth the potential loss of life in my opinion. Of all things, I'd imagine that being with a bride or groom at a wedding is probably the most crime-free place on earth for that given moment.

It CAN happen anywhere. You know what else happens anywhere? Accidents. With guns.
You know what ELSE can happen anywhere? Alien invasion. I better wear my tinfoil hat everywhere....you know, just in case.
How about I start looking up person on person crime and you start looking up alien invasions, then we can both report back how many times each has happened and compare...
I've never been in a car accident, I think I'll have my airbags removed.

Sure it "can" happen, but if something has a 0.00021% probability of occuring is it really worth spending any effort even attempting to prevent it?
It's like refusing to fly in an airplane because you are afraid it will crash. Your odds are over 1,000 times greater of dying on the drive to the flight, so at some point doesn't it become ridiculous to continue living by that logic?
