No tripod collar included. The collar from the 28-300 fits perfectly, BTW.

But I do however have to take Canon to task for charging $200 for the tripod ring.... the lens is pricey enough and the ring should have been included!
so unless Canon have decided they will put the ring in (or Adorama include it) I would go with the guys that have the lens in hand (but not on a tripod )

I've just PM'ed Helen. I hope she can clarify this.
That's why the question merits a head-on comparison of the two lenses. It's not like I'm going to get the L over the Tamron whatever the new results, but others might find it very helpful and enlightening.
I got a few of the Tamron today and I will say clearly it won't compete on autofocus speed. Its a leisurely autofocusing lens. Even the original Canon 70-300 IS is quicker to autofocus. That's probably not a key point on this kind of lens, but its a point. The other thing is the Tamron VC does not have a panning mode, it fights you if you try to pan.
I'm now out of the Canon 70-300L so I can't do a head to head yet, but should have some more in next week.
I'm curious to know what you new owners think about the build quality. Does it deserve the red ring or does it feel plasticky or? Thanks for any insight.
